well i have recently purchased a afx ecu from ebay for 250.00. the guy was selling his car and was taking all the performance parts off. He seemed like a good ebayer and had %100 rating, he also had other parts on there too, like crank pulley, ajustable cams exc. so i figured well this isnt a scam. I got the ecu yesterday, there was no afx stickers or nething like that on it.. i installed the ecu and well i couldnt really notice a diference, i mean it runs good but i dont really feel much of a diference in pull exc. Now today it seemed alittle better but if it is a real afx ecu its not what i expected.. on that note is there any way i can tell this is a real afx ecu ? i called howell and they said it should have there sticker on it, and it doesnt but i just dont wanna say its not because some sticker isnt on it. Anyone have any ideas ? If you have one how much of a diference did it make? all the help i can get would be greatly appreciated, because if its not im going to try and get my money back..:mad:
 
I always thought AFX ECUs were just reprogrammed stock ECUs. I don't think they help THAT much, but you should feel a little difference. I have never had any experience with them, but have read up on them. Maybe Driggs will chime into this thread since I do think he has one on his talon.
 
The biggest gain from them is from the timing advance caused.. I've read several stories and some people describe fairly noticible gains, while others see no difference. I also read that you should run no less than 93 octane.(due to the timing advance) So fill up with that, if you haven't already. On the OEM ECU's there is a sticker running along the socket of the ECU which includes part #'s. There's nothing like that on this one?
 
I suspect the easiest way to tell would be observing the rev limit. 7500 for the street AFX, 8100 for the race AFX.
 
i did fill her up with some 93 octane right before. im pretty sure i saw the oem sticker but not a sticker from howell. whats the stock rev limiter? so basically i have to rev past redline to see if it hits the limit..
 
Funny thing is I've seen a couple of AF/X's and have seen no tags or anything. But there was an immediate noticeable difference in power and redline. Should rev up to 8100 (but mine somehow lost it's redline and it went down to 7800. Don't know why). At any rate, you should notice a definite power change in fuel pulled and timing advance alone.

I hestitate to tell you to see if you can rev up to 8k because I don't want you coming back to me and saying you threw a rod or sumpin' :p . But if it was me, I would certainly check the cut line.

Funny thing is, I would have sold you mine for an additional $50 :coy:

i will try to rev it up and see but just shifting at redline makes me kringe LOL
whats stock rev limiter? that way i know if it goes past that.
 
ok i reved her to 7500 rpm so it must be a afx ecu correct? im really starting to notice the diference now. It acc. alot quicker and has alot more pep which is from the advanced timming, but i need to get my topend end done soon. It has 151k and the headgasket is leaking and the valve seals need done so nows the time to do it. i bet it will run tons better afterwards also..
one more thing when i was testing it right after wards i lost my powersteering and a/c.. i just figured my belt or somthing fell off, well i checked it and its still there just really really lose like to the point i can just pull it off.. i looked at the tensioner and it was still tight and the belts not shredded.. wtf ?
 
Check to see that it is routed on the pulleys still. If so, loosen the locking bolt and tighten the tensioner until the belt is tight again. Then re-tighten the locking bolt.
