I've done some searching on this and I can't seem to get a definite answer. I'm looking at an AWD that needs some work done to it, and since I'm pulling the head on it, I was going to do a little head work on it while its off. Now the question is can you install an aftermarket cam and still use the stock springs and retainers or will I have to get aftermarket springs and retainers? I was thinking about getting some 264's but I found some Brian Crower 272's for cheap and I might get those. Any info would be appreciated as I am still hazy on headwork. Thanks.

comp 101200

Valve lift: .411/.395
Duration in degrees: 272
Duration @.050 in degrees: 258

I personally went with comp because they have been around for awhile and have the R & D!

Give Slowboy a call and see what they can do with the BC cams.....I just got my 280's and S&R kit ordered a couple days ago and I can't wait to get them in....SBR beat the competitors price by far.....

You can get evo8/9 valve springs and retainers for really cheap and they are a good upgrade.

Agreed. Still I would go with at least BC valvetrain on any 272. They are cheap a little upgrade over stock. Problem throwing them on stock valvetrain is the springs are old and used. When the stock valvetrain is new it works great but I've seen people here float a valve at a shop on HKS 272's and stock valvetrain.

I had BC 272's with a 100% stock OEM cylinder head on my 7 bolt 95 talon with 145k miles. I only got to race it a handful of times and took it to the dyno once before I spun a rod bearing, but I pulled about 400awhp with them and redlined it. I think you should be ok, but upgrading is safer.

My friend with his evo asked me about upgrading stock valvetrain when bought GSC yesterday, and i told him he should be fine with stock and 272. But, his car only has <50k on the motor. Thats a big difference than 100k or 150k. I would go with a cheap set of upgraded valvetrain as suggested before the BC. They are a cheap insurance!

Another thing to consider is how much boost you'll be running, believe it or not. A local shop has seen a number of cars which floated valves thanks to high boost pressure behind the valves in combination with high rpms, but not overrevved. Mostly e85 cars running a minimum of high-20's psi on stock springs/retainers.

I have fp2's with stocksprings and retainers and will be revving to 8000rpm. I will let you know how it goes. I hope I can have the car running this weekend, which is going to be hard since I have nobody to help me.

I use this combo and rev to 8k, did it for a season. 80-90 passes no issues. this was at 31psi on a s258.
