Guys I'm in dire need of an answer for this problem. After my starter went at the end of last fall, I decided to just garage the car for the winter. Well after a long cold winter it is finally getting nice and warm out. Long story short: after inspection of the dead starter my flywheel ended up being shot too and both were replaced by my mechanic brand new. Here's the problem, after a few starts with no grind or anything...the car literally rips the threads out of the starter! All I hear is the *whizzzz* of the starter spinning. After another starter was tried, it would start a few times again...maybe 3 or 4 times before POP and the *whizzzzzz* again...The starter is flush and torqued hard, the flywheel is an exact match and there is definitely power getting to the starter. So my question is....what gives??

Okay - apologies if this is a stupid question/suggestion/thought.

Our 96 GSX had problems because the starter plate was from a FWD
and not from a AWD.

When we purchased the car there was no indication the engine had ever been
out or replaced.

But at some point (when the replacement starter had problems) we
realized the starter plate was not right for the AWD GSX car.

So, in brief - the starter is the same for both cars - AWD and FWD.
The flywheel is different, 106 teeth for AWD (smaller)
and 110 teeth for FWD (larger).

The starter plate that helps line up the starter is different too.

In our case the FWD plate was driller and bent to fit the AWD.
A new (only $15 or $20) plate put the starter right where it needed to be.

Looking forward to your conclusion and solution.
