A sound I dont want to hear..

95 4g63t 114k miles. Hey guys ive had this car for a few months now and have only driven it when i had 20day plateson it. Been putting some work into it:
All 4 rotors
brakes
calipers
k&n filter
5w-30 oil
fram oil ilter
bosch plugs
battery.

When i bought it, it already had a 3'' apexi turboback exhaust on it, aftermarktet turbo not sure 100% on it. (he said 16g?). stock intercooler/piping.
5 spoke rims.
After the work i put into it i started it up yesterday and the engine made a tickin' sound. lasted for about 30 seconds and stopped. ive seen videos on youtube with this engine tickin and it wasnt a good outcome. im just wondering what it is and how i could avoid this sound.

no lifters need to be replaced in the head under the rocker arms.

Yea Probably lifter tick. It could go away on its own you'll just have to drive it and see. If it doesn't theres a few ways to stop it. You can use Lucas every oil change and that should stop it. Or change them to 3g/Revised lifters. The ticking is harmless though, just a little annoying.

You can try using a 3000GT or Stealth oil filter to get rid of lifter tick.

If its only 30 seconds then its probably just lifter tick.

Does it have a Fram on it? They have an antidrain back valve thats made of plastic and then to melt and cause dry start ups thus lifter tick.

The oil filter is fram yes. and rengar18 its harmless? does it progress to get worse and does it affect reliability and performance.

Ehh, just changing the oil filter isnt going to solve lifter tick, but get rid of the Fram..its junk.

Op no..Lifter tik is just annoying, but it's harmless..It happens after time on 1g and 2g lifters..Alot of people just go with 3g lifters when they redo the head..It does fix it tho..

I've tried the lucas stuff, It does help a bit..

Here is a picture to help ya out. A bigger oil hole is the reason everyone goes with 3g lifters.

Blue Point (Snap On) sells a tool to help change them. Tool number YA9970

Just pull the valve cover, use the tool to push down on the valve spring, remove the rocker arm, pull out the old lifter, install new 3g lifter, push back down on valve spring with tool, re-install rocker arm, repeat 15 more times.



edit: 5w-30 should be fine as you are in new hampshire and its getting colder out.

Yep as stated above its harmless. Doesn't hurt anything its just a bit noisy

Yes there compatible with all 4g63t heads.

An an secondary issue that you do run into is phantom knock, if it is loud enough for you to HEAR with your ears, then the knock sensor is (for sure)picking it up, and pulling timing.

additionally, just because it quiets down enough to not hear over engine noise doesnt mean its not ticking away, the knock sensor is still picking it up, killing timing.

reduced timing will cause fuel economy issues and reduced performance.
