a/c removal

Ive looked everywhere on this forum but I can find a write up on A/C removal. Anyone care to help??

unhook the lines and remove them, and remove the belt. you'll be fine.

Don't over-complicate it. Just rip it out. Follow all the AC lines...anything they're attached to..take it off and out.

By taking the AC out doe that mean you also lose heat as well?

i know... AC is usually referred about cooling temps down. But i am unfamiliar with the ac setup in automobiles. Will this mean i would be unable to turn heat on too?

you will not lose heat, it's in a totally different system. be careful unhooking the lines if it is charged with r-134a it will burn you (even if it's been evacuated or you know your ac is not working). (it is illegal to take it out into the atmosphere -just don't get caught by epa ), the safest way is get somebody with an ac machine and evacuate the system to get rid of 99% of the r134a. you can cut the ac belt, get rid of the compressor and all the lines.

No by removing the A/C you still have heat. They are seperate functions. The only way you would loose the heat would be from a heatercore failure or if you loop the system.

To the OP, just follow the lines and disconect them, if you are planning on deleting the A/C, you might as well remove everything. I have deleted mine and the only difficult part was gettting the compressor and bracket off and out. I ended up having to remove the master cylinder to pull the compressor out. Other then that it was pretty easy. Also be careful removing the condensor it is a tight fit against the radiator and support. I know that you can remove it without removing the radiator, but not sure if the front bumper must be removed. Mine was already off.

I had all the pieces weighed at UPS. Came in at a whopping 47 lbs.

I actually just ripped mine out a few days ago. Its pretty simple. Like stated before just follow the lines off the compressor and start unbolting them and pulling them out. The only thing you might have to do is if you remove the compressor and its bracket you'll have to find a spacer thats the close to the exact size of the bracket that the driverside axle bolts to the block with. I noticed you have a 90 and a lot of things are different in 90's and I'm not 100% sure about the axle spacer/bracket. I actually have the tranny out of my dsm so I was able to pull the compressor out from underneath the car cause of all the extra room. I'm not sure if it possible to do it with the tranny still in the car.

I removed my intake manifold when I did mine. I don't see how anyone could get the compressor out without taking off the IM.

i had no problem taking mine out from under the car. I'm not sure it mattered that my tranny and starter were out. It actually came out quite easy. I would imagine with the axle still in the tranny it might not fit but i don't know for sure.

Does anyone know if shops still pay you for removal of R12 because of it being so rare?

I had it sucked out of my 91 civic for 22 bucks in Florida a few years ago.
