Update : 5809345 SHE LIVES?!

1 : I got my new CAS cover in! This was really easy to install. Just took the old one off and screwed this one on. :D

casw.jpg

2 : Installed my lower radiator hose. Took a guess on a hose and found one that fit perfectly, save for the shifter counter weight hitting it. I cut it off and now have absolutely no issues with clearance! The part number for this is SKU : 5196248 / 70783

3 : I thought I would finally get to start it so I installed my battery, but when I connected the Negative things went to hell. Sparks flew and my 100amp alternator fuse blew. Alternator tested bad. So.. on went a new one!

4 : the day finally came when I would start it! So, I checked everything out, uploaded the injector size and deadtimes with ECUflash, kicked her over~....wouldn't start. Would hit but not start. Pulled the plugs to find this (In this order mind you.)

Ended up being a bad PTU.

5 : .. Well..

Good work getting her running man! Sounds like she needs some tuning, but I have faith in you. :thumb:

p.s. Check out my thread if you haven't in awhile. I just added some updates you might want to check out. ;)

Hahah. Look at you, thread jacking! ;P More updates coming soon!

Corey - it's looking even better with more time. :D

Very nice, glad to see it running!

Lmao. Relying on phones for internet is bad joo-joo. >.<

That... is a terrible fate. I truly feel for you. =/

Update !

I am battling mysterious vacuum leaks left and right! I have used smoke, propane, starter fluid, and also the good ole' Boost Leak Test to try to pinpoint where the leaks are, and while I have located and fixed several, there are at least 1-2 more substantial ones I just can't find. I'm afraid that it's a throttle body shaft seal. God please don't let it be that - but no matter what I spray around with, there is no difference in idle. I just can't find it.

I've gotten the idle down to 1000rpm with an obvious miss (you can hear it over the aggressive cams) and was able to set the base timing as well as get the RPMs down without bottoming out the BISS. I'm coming up at a loss here. Vacuum hovers around 12psi which is quite a bit lower than what I'm used to.

My 272 cams have 10-11 vac idle.

Id say if you have cams your idle is about right.

Theres a guy in the classifieds that I have rebuild my TB's. I send in 3 or 4 cores and he will rebuild for free or discount. I believe its 130 for rebuild. awdtalon21 is his name. He does great work. Id say with all the coin your putting in this beauty then it deserves a rebuilt 1G TB.

Good luck and I look forward to your updates!

After quite a bit of research I found the information about the 10-15 vacuum level at idle. Happy to say that I found that. I was a bit worried.

I did some more messing around and I just couldn't believe that I had a boost leak -that- big. I ripped off the throttle body elbow, pulled the ISC plug, and checked the screw for my throttle plate. Apparently while I set the TPS perfectly, it was off due to the throttle plate stop screw - it was in a full 10 turns for some reason. So I backed it out so as it wasn't touching the plate, then screwed it in a full 1 1/4 turn, reset the TPS, turned the BISS in completely and then back out 2 turns - after 10 minutes of idling it lined out, AFRs stayed stable at 14.4-14.7, and she dropped to 850-1000rpm.

Now I discovered a coolant leak from the Heater Core hose. :ohdamn:

Located my leak. Won't seal due to it. Hrm..how to address, how to address.

I thought about JB weld or quicksteeling around it and then sanding it down, but the thought of something breaking off and clogging my cooling system has me scared.

Glad to see this car coming together. Trust me, with every build, there's always snags. I remember (with my car) that from the time of its first start up to when it actually drove down the road was 2 months apart due to stupid setbacks. LOL!

You are getting there, so keep it up!!

Update : Alive

So after a year of sitting, she moved.

I have been fighting with various small annoyances over the past few days trying to get it to this point. Coolant Leaks. Radiator fan not kicking on. 02 Sensor wiring being faulty. Oil Pressure gauge not working. Boost gauge line breaking. But it's all come down to this.

I fired her up after doing an oil change. Which, being on the subject - I ran a magnet through my oil upon draining it yesterday and found no flakes that stuck to it. However, upon pulling the oil filter and kitting it, I found a bit off tiny aluminum. This is what I had -known- was going to happen from the head being drilled out which is why I hand pumped oil through it to begin with. I plan on running another oil cycle through. So far I'm on the 3rd cycle. I'm treating this like a fresh build - As with those you expect a little glitter in the oil for a few cycles which is why you change the oil so often. So I'll do this a few more times and should be fine.

One thing I am not enjoying is that my stock oil pressure gauge is not working. I can't find any information on it besides "plug the wire up." However even testing the wire and grounding it - it changes nothing with the stock gauge. Sadly I believe the wire is bad somewhere but I have no idea where it runs or how to trace it.

Anywho, there are a few things left that I need to do before I have it given a base tune. Need to replace the check ball on the boost gauge to lock the line in place.

Here she is! Drove here smooth as butter! :D

My oil gauge didnt work when I first got mine running either. It turned out to be a bad gauge. I swapped the oil gauge with another one from a cluster I had lying around and it works just fine now. If you have another cluster, throw that one in and see if it will work. Its not a very complex system. Either you actually have really low pressure, or it could be the sender, wire, or gauge.

Looking good BTW, with the exception of that bumper of course. :p j/k

Sadly I don't. =/ Guess an electronic gauge is in my near future. I don't like the idea of running hot oil into the cabin of my car. I turned the car over with the oil feed line off to verify flow.. >_> I highly doubt I have low pressure. Lol.

I FIXED THE BUMPER, DAMN YOU! ROFL

Ha, wish I was local to you... It would be nice to drive another 98 Tsi Awd :p . Being as so far an few between they are to find...

Anyway love the car :) Glad it's finally going.

From what i can tell it looks better. What was causing it to not bolt up properly?

I'm not real sure why it's not mating up flush. I might drop it once the rain subsides and drill the holes out and bolt/washer/nut it.
