I have a 97 gst. The transmission has this sensor with the harness plug. The harness plug is cut 6” away from the harness connector. Where do I splice it back to.I can’t find the wire on the harness tha comes from the passenger side firewall.

Is that the backup light switch? That is what it looks like in the picture. If it is, it just makes a connection to turn on the reverse lights.

Ok so I found where it goes the guy soldered the wires together for I don’t know what reason. My pigtail is from a different year I assume. Should I just hook both red with blue stripe to white with blue stripe and then hook both black with red stripe to black with blue stripe

That will work. You can test it pretty easily before soldering, or using crimp connectors. The electrical sensor on the transmission that is plugging into, is what engages your reverse tail lights when you shift into reverse. With it not connected, it will simply not engage the reverse lights.

Do you have any way to check for voltage on either pin/wire on the body harness, like a volt meter or digital multi meter? I would look for voltage first just to see that there isn't any, then go from there. The backup light switch only makes a connection to ground for the lights to come on so at least one wire should be a ground wire. I wouldn't want you tying into a wire that is "hot" with a switched ground. It would definitely blow a fuse.
