97 gst hitting rev limitor at 5000rpm

i have a 97 eclipse gst its basically stock only thing i have done so far is a 3" exhaust all the way back and a intake. before i did the exhaust it was running fine now after when im driving and i rev it to 5000rpm it feels like its hitting a rev limitor and the speedometer like jumps back and forth. we just did the timing and everything is on the car takes off until i hit 5000rpm and i cant figure out what it is so i would really appreciate some suggestions on what i should do.

When you did the intake, did you keep the stock MAS?

I have the same problem on my esi.. When car is cold, it will stop at 2k, when car has warmed up, it stops at 3k... If you find your problem please let me know!

^^ do that, and when was the last time you changed your fuel filter? i had a problem with another car where it was bucking and hitting what seemed to be fuel cut at around 4k rpm or with any hard throttle, but it was a non-turbo car, and it ended up being the fuel filter got so clogged that it bursted open inside and a bunch of rusty-crap got sucked into the injectors clogging them.... The car still idled and ran as long as i didnt throttle it.... cleaned it all up and it ran like a champ...

yea when i did the intake i kept the stock mas...and when my father drove it he said it felt like it was running out of gas but the tank was almost full so im going to change the fuel filter and see what heppens

Do you have a DSMlink? If so use it to see what is going on with you motor. If not, consider getting it.

My money is on a boost leak, as stated do a boost leak test. You can find the info on how to do and build a boost leak tester on VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions, good luck!

i changed the fuel filter and i put a bov and did a boost leak test we didnt hear any leaks and the car will go to 6000rpm and stop now

Was the fuel filter the culprit?

i fixed the problem it was my speed sensor the wire was so loose so i adjusted the pins and it fits on there tight and the car is running fine now it revs all the way to redline with no problems

I am having a very similar problem, car pulls hard in 1st thru 3rd to redline, than in 4th or 5th i am not sure what rpm or speed it seems to very. The engine looses power and stutters, not as bad as when you hit the rev or speed limiter. I am not sure, where is the speed sensor ? Have not done a BLT, made the adapter but do not have a large air compressor to charge the system, tried to use my portable air compressor that i use to air up my tires but it was not str enough. The fuel filter was replace last year when i had the transmission and clutch replaced.

the speed sensor is located on the top of the transmission if you remove the battery and the plates underneath it you will see it it is on the top toward the back of the tranny pull on it and make sure the connection is tight because wen i touched mine it came right off so i adjusted the pins and it made it fit tighter
