I own a 97 gst spyder eclipse and im having a very strange problem with my power range. Whenever i launch hard when racing or just having fun getting onto a freeway my car feels as though it hits a brick wall of power at about 5,000 rpm.
If i go into it half throttle it lets me go through all gears at full boost and power without any fault but if its fully pressed to the floor it just wants to buck and in the only way i could describe the sound tapped out redline. ( as if i just hit redline and there is nothing left.).

PLEASE HELP!!!!

As for emissions i cant get it to pass the code part of the test. I have replaced every item on the code list ( an O2 sensor here a Mass air flow plug there) and no matter what i do codes will still pop even after i have them cleared. the weird part is that i have no check engine light for the codes..... im stuck and i have no idea what to do. Some have said to try the ecu and replace it, havent tryed that yet but heck im about to.

It sounds like your ECU has retained a few stored codes. What have you done in terms of maintenance? i.e. ignition components and fuel filter. Also, have you performed a boost leak test yet?

If you haven't already

1. Put new spark plugs in.

2. Check the wires for cracks, etc.

3. Do a boost leak test.

4. While your intake is off for your boost leak test, check your turbo for shaftplay.

4. Log your car.

You could be pulling timing. The only way to know is log your car. A cheap way is to use a Palm logger. (PocketLogger, etc). When my turbo was on its way out, it would stop pulling almost at higher RPMs.

As far as emissions go, if you say you have replaced all that stuff, shouldn't you just about have enough money in reciepts that you can get a waiver? I think the amount here is between $300 and $500.

So far ive put in...
* new spark plugs and wires.
* new mass sensor and air temp gauge.
* cleared all codes countless times.
* pulled all plugs and sensors and cleaned out all dirt and buildup.

I havent been able to drive my car since last oct and its killing me.

Thank you so far for you help with this matter. Nice to know other dsm guys really care.

What brand spark plugs did you use and at what gap? You really need to perform a boost leak test as what you've described is one of the bigger symptoms. I would go ahead and ohm-test your Power Transistor Unit and Coilpack while you're at it.

Just as mentioned above, it definitely could be pulled timing. That is a result from something iffy with your combustion.

Also, exactly what "codes" are you constantly clearing??

sorry about that i should have put up the codes. dont have the numbers on me atm but i do remember what they were coded to.

*Mass air flow sensor
*Both 02 sensors
*Air temp press sensor
*Fuel cell fail and fuel pressure unit

Im sorry if i dont seem like i know too much about the car yet. Im learning about imports atm, if this was a muscle car or older hot rod i would have it torn out and rebuilt already LOL. Always wanted to try the other more turbo side of the car world. :)

By "Air temp pressure sensor" did you mean the MAP [Manifold Absolute Pressure] sensor? It's also referred to as MDP. Have you replaced this?

"Fuel cell fail and fuel pressure unit" sounds like your fuel delivery and fuel pressure regulator. I wasn't aware that a code could be thrown for those IF that's what they're for.

You said in your original post that you've already replaced the MAS and o2 sensor. I'm sure someone else will chime in though.

yep you hit the nail on the head with the MAP. Havent replaced it yet though. I need to.

The fuel code was fixed by replacing the fuel press solenoid, manufacturer told me that it was that code and made me pay $400+ to fix. Prob lied about it knowing them :). Fixed the prob for a week then the code kept popping up over and over. So i have to keep clearing it or else it freaks out my fuel system.

Mas was replaced but the code keeps poping. No idea why!!??? o2s were replaced but still code keeps comming up. Im almost positive my ecu is trash. But my car only has 45k miles on it. I just cant see this many problems on an engine so young. :banghead:
