97 Galant Alternator in a 2g Turbo

97 galant is plug n play. However, on my car, idle produces low voltage compared to stock alternator. That would mean the internals(how fast they spin/number of coils etc) is different.
I'm going to the saturn swap and calling it good.
I changed nothing, just an alternator. No variables. The galant makes ~14.5 at around 2000+ rpm, turns maybe 12 at 1200 or so.
Has not caused an issue because obviously when you're fuel pump is pulling a lot of current the rpms will be much higher.
I hear the saturn swap is very simple and extremely robust.

The Galant one I got makes 14.3V at 900 RPM.

I don't doubt it one bit. ya know when you go to an oreilly or autozone? they sell you a "reman'd" alternator? yea........not all are alike. I still have a life time warranty on it but since i drive bessie so rarely i haven't messed with it. Where did you buy yours, if i might ask?
Mine was autozone.
Do you notice a dip when the engine warms up or anything weird like that?
I have went through more than a handful of "brand new" alternators that were bad right outta the box(different cars, long time ago. Not the dsm). It happens. No big deal. But i really think this saturn swap looks like the be all-end all.
One thing i have not done is run new 4ga wiring from alternator. Thats the only thing on my list. Like i said though, i have a spare stock alternator and it functions normally down to low rpm but day 1 with the galant alt i noticed the issue.

I believe i am the exception to the rule, so to speak. Most all would give no issues, i just got a quirky one.

That's good to know though. If i don't do the saturn swap then i'll take this one back and have them give me a new one. 90A is plenty enough to keep up with my rewired 450 and stock ignition system
Thanks for the post bro. Take care

did not know that thanks for the correction

See
"SOADweskey"s post. Sounds like i got a bad one. or a slightly faulty one. He is having excellent results so don't be spooked by my encounter. Remanufactured alts are always iffy. Having owned many cars when i was young i saw plenty fail straight outta the box.

I bought mine from oriellys, and in the past I have also had bad luck with autopart store remanufactured alternators. Glad it didn't happen this time because it's a little bit more of a pain to change the DSM one than on my old 1971 El Camino.

Once the car has been driven a bit the idle voltage goes down to high 13s, I assume that once the battery is in a full state of charge the demand at idle goes down.

I am using an Advance Auto 97 Galant alternator and it's the best alternator I've ever had. I've had lots of other parts store ones go bad on me but this one has been a factory freak or something. I guess it's just one of those hit or miss things. The one I have now I assume is a reman, it has a diamond star cast in to it

I see up to 14.4v at idle and up to 14.1 at 8500rpm. Pretty dang impressive considering my fuel pump is like the second to largest electric fuel pump you can buy. In addition to the factory charge wires, I ran a 0 gauge cable with 100 amp fuse directly to the battery.

I tried the galant alternator over the summer at idle I had low 12s and would go up as the Rpms did. I want to add it was a cheap alternator from autozone.

Not saying this is what you were experiencing but thought I would put it out there.
The 2g dsm alternators (as well as the Galant, and many other vehicles) have a low and high output mode. The low voltage output is around 12.3, the high voltage output is around 14.4.
The output is controlled by the ECU grounding/floating the alternator G terminal (pin 33).
