97 Galant 4G64 in 96 Spyder?

I have a 96 Eclipse Spyder with a bad 2.4 4G64 and want to know if the 2.4 4G64 out of a 97 Galant will work. Im not trying to turbo it or change the head or cams or anything like that, i just want to use the longblock. The interchange at pickapart says no, but the motors look the same except for the ignition system. Will it work?

yes it will. You'll need to change the intake manifold over to the galant engine. The galant intake manifold doesnt have the mounting holes for the power transistor and coilpacks.

I cant say for sure, but I think the Eclipse cam sensor has a bolt into the camshaft where the galant distributor doesnt. What im not sure about is if the galant camshaft has the threaded hole.

Worst case scenario you may have to change over the camshaft.

97 Galants also have the split bearing design block.

Thanks, I still have all the parts from the original motor to use. I bought the car off the back of a tow truck as it was pulling into the junkyard. It ran but was knocking, so i tore the whole motor apart only to find out that the knock was coming from a cracked bolt hole on the flexplate where it bolts to the torque convertor
