im not too familiar with DSMs, but i do have engine building experience.

my friend is looking to build his motor

its a 96 talon TSi AWD

he has roughly $3700 to put into the motor

the gameplan is build the motor now, upgrade turbo, intercooler, tuning, etc later. we are going for a strong motor now that can handle lots of power later. when its first done everything but the motor and trans will be stock.

the $3700 is for the motor only, the trans clutch and flywheel are already taken care of

the $3700 must be for all parts and machine work, i will be building the motor.

i need suggestions for the following:
-rods
-pistons
-rings
-bearings
-bolts
-gaskets
-cams
-valvetrain
-headwork
-machinework
-anything i may have missed

please give suggestions and keep the total under $3700

what are some good sites to shop at?

also, is there any tips/tricks/pointers/advice anyone would like to give?

ive never touched a DSM but ive built several motors before, including the one in my contour (3L hybrid with all the goodies, and a MTX conversion)

thanks,
Russell

For that amount of money you'll be able to toss in most everything you want... As the other posted suggested look at the parts catalog up at the top of the forum headers... As far as what parts to put in you need to come up with a real world horsepower amount you want to shoot for. Based on that number people here can suggest certains parts...

I too am getting ready to rebuild a motor for my car, but I did it the other way, I've got everything already installed on the car and the engine is last...

SBR Stage 2 Stroker Kit 7-Bolt $1550.00
Stage III 2G Head $1349.00
Complete Engine Gasket Kit (Model: 2G 7 Bolt) $159.00
Cometic High Pressure Metal Head Gasket $105.00
Balance Shaft Eliminator Kit $42.00
Timing Belt Kit ( 2G ) $179.00
ARP 7-Bolt Head Studs $110.00
ARP Main Studs (ALL) $59.00
ARP 7-Bolt Rod Bolts $44.95
Subtotal $3597.95

hows this list sound, all parts are from slowboy (which is semi-local to me)

i figure cams can be added easily later when money allows

anyhting i should change, add or remove?

thanks,
Russell

I haven't heard good things about the stroker kits for our engines, either get a 2.4l block and adapt it, or just spend the money on forged rods, pistons (8.5:1 is ideal, more requires better gas), ss valves, titanium retainers... But then again that's me...

Your knowledge of engines might not be based on the turbo ones I take it... With a turbo getting more displacement isn't the best thing you can do. Getting it to handle more boost safely is.

Also, you might want to find a 6 bolt block for the car, the 7 bolt has some issues that randomly come up (better safe than sorry).
