I found a 96 talon AWD on craigslist, the owner says that it has a "racing" 6 bolt swap in it with about 4000 miles on it. I have no way of proving or disproving that it is "Racing" which I believe that he means Stage 1. It is a 6 bolt, I figure this based on it having the camshaft positioning sensor on the side of the head.
The owner stopped driving it because he was losing oil and cause it developed a strange and loud noise. I went and checked on it, and TBH I was expecting a knock and was similarly expecting to walk away. But I am confidant if not 100% sure that its not a knock, it is distinctly coming from the timing belt side of the engine and it is a consistent sound not something that happens every-time a cylinder ignites. I also put a mechanics stethoscope against the front and back of the block with no alarming sounds present.
Q#1 ) The sound seems plastic-ee so I figure its the Timing belt tensioner but I'm not sure. I have to change the timing belt anyways because the timing belt has a groove in it from one of the bolts in the oil pan was put on the wrong hole. But I wanted to know what else I should look for while im in there.
Before this newbies WALL O' TEXT gets on everyone's nerves I will get to the turbo problem, or what I'm figuring is a turbo problem. I am not a turbo expert nor shall i pretend to be.
Q#2 ) The turbo is supposed to be an evo III 16g swap on the turbo it reads "TD05' I cant remember if it said TD05 "H" or not, nor do i know what the difference is.
There is a vacuum line on the intake that had oil seeping from it, I Think its rebuild time.
The owner didn't wish to run the car for too long due to the unknown sound, and not knowing what damage may happen. So I cant say how much or when smoke may appear.
Q#3 ) If i am to buy a rebuild kit, I'm wondering if there is a way to figure out if the turbo has the "flat back" or "super back" oil plate. and what the difference is between them.
Q#4 ) While under the assumption that its the turbo that is burning oil. what kit should i use to rebuild it? and what gaskets will i need? as in oil feed and return tube gaskets and all that.
Thanks in advance.
