hey guys im new in the world of dsm i have just a plain jane eclipse and im having some problems like finding the pig tails for the alternator and map sensor as well as finding the de fogger turn off relay any ideas that could help me out would be awesome

i was also wondering if anyone knows were i could find colored light bulbs for my gauges or if they sell different gauge set ups

Ok so im hearing a lot of talk from people saying that the 1.8l also refereed to as the 4g37 is a waste of time to build is that so or are their mods out their for your back woods boys to build some power with this engine i really don't wanna have to do a motor swap i already put in a new coil and aftermarket fuel pressure regulator any ideas on what else i can do to build more power

The 4g37 is a dog. Probably the most reliable motor I've had through. I did the 4g63t swap, and while it was fun, and totally worth the experience, I would not do it again. Just keep your car reliable and fuel efficient, and look for a turbo dsm.

Yes, welcome.... I had three DSM's - two 4G37's, kept one for town driving and to include a turbo Laser to hit the roads with.

- When you press the defog button, you should hear a relay kick in under the dash. But if the window still doesnt clean, usually it could be one of the connections that are soldered to the glass have broken open or the lines themselves have broken open as well.

As for building more power from these motors, best not spend anymore money on the idea since you'll never get more maybe 2 to 4 percent gain with hundreds spent to do such...they weren't designed for power, but for economy.

Have you checked the fuse underneath the dash for the rear defogger to see if it is good or not?

Here's another site for 4G37 owners to attend: www.dsm1eights.org and DSM Forums: Eclipse, Laser and Eagle Talon Forum: DSMtalk.com where their is a dedicated page for the 4G37 owners.

Fun little motors - treat them well, easy to work on and they'll never die. Seen over 300k miles on these motors and still running without a hitch.

Good luck - DSM

ok guy's so i just blew my 4g37 the timing belt blew off after im motor had a strange noise not a knock but a metal on metal sound i know my oil pump was working so i don't know what i could have been i haven't pulled apart the engine yet only cause i don't have the time but i will put up pics of the tare down and i was wondering if the g62b cylinder head will bolt up to the 4g37 ? also if the cylinder head wont bolt up will the g62b bolt up to my manual tranny ?

Put a new belt on it, and you're good to go. The 4G37 is a non-interference motor. Most likely what you heard is lifter tick. The 4G37 suffers from it pretty bad. Why did the belt slip off? Usually, old or word cam and front case seals are what cause the belt to leave in a hurry. You might not need a new motor. Check it out first.

well what happened was the bolts somehow cam louse from the harmonic balancer and i thought that was my noise bit it wasn't so i took it off and and removed the timing case and started my car it ran with the noise dident sound like a ticking more like something in the bottom ed bouncing around the motor was running fine other that the noise i went to rev it up and when i did the timing belt just snapped

From experience, the swap isn't hard and was well worth it. Would love to do it again if i had the time and money!
It's no less reliable than a TSi, if build properly and maintained regularly, you should have no issues.

But that's up to you to choose.
But I would take the oil pan off and inspect it, see if there's anything in there.

ya i know it i have been trying to find a cheap one but its been hard to do i would love to have one but i wanna see if i can fix my 1.8 and work it i had just installed a venom performance control modular im thinking that's what did my motor in but i wont know till i pull my oil pan

my engine had the noise before the belt broke

my engine had the noise before the belt broke

You have to take the timing cover off and take the timing belt off. There is a timing mark on the oil pump pulley and on the balace shaft under the timing cover. You have to then line up those two marks with the marks on the block/oil pump housing. Once those are aligned you can then align your crank pulley and cam and put the timing belt back on. Note that you can have the balance shaft 180 degreea off but the marks will still align right.but if its off by 180 degrees you will hear it. It will sound like HUGE ball bearings are bouncing around in your engine. If that happens jusy remove the timing belt and timing cover again and turn the balance shaft and oil pump pulley a full rotation around til the marks align again and then you can put your timing belt back on.

well the dealership wants 850 for the harness and they can't even get it any more and i have a repair manual so hopefully the timing belt wont be so hard i am a back woods boy mechanic but i have never messed with a timing belt and im kinda nervous to do it i don't want to ruin my engine

i have a hanes repair manual but the photos aren't that descriptive on the timing marks and it makes me realy nervous on doing the timing belt seeing as how i have never done it before and i have heard that if my belt is off by one tooth the the motor will be ####ed as soon as i turn the key is that the case with a non interference motor ?
