1G 92 Talon Rod knock...?

So I just bought a 92 Talon TSI from a friend of a friend and I'm new the forum and the DSM world but I've been researching for awhile now. He told me before I bought it that it has a rod knock but does run and drive. So after listening to it for awhile it did not sound like a rod knock to me...More of a ticking than a tapping/knock. After doing a real quick check of plugs,fluids, turbo shaft, and just generally looking over it I noticed the oil was low it just barely was hitting bottom of the dipstick. Well it took about a quart and a half of oil before being about the right level. The ticking has quited down alot but I still seem to hear it slightly. To me it sounds like lifter tick honestly. Anybody know if there is a way to hopefully eliminate rod knock as a possibility? Btw this is not my DD so I'm not abusing it hoping that'll it will be OK...

Does the tick get louder as the rpms increase?

Pull a sparkplug wire off one at a time and if it seems to go away or get alot quieter, its a rod. You are taking the load off that cylinder when you pull the spark. Be careful, they can and will BITE.

Yes the tick seems to get louder but I wouldn't say that it get to the point of being excessive.

I had read about taking the spark plugs off one at a time. I wasn't sure if the concept was like you said to take load from that cylinder and therefore the bearing. But I guess after sitting down and thinking about it that makes sense it doesn't take much effort to move a single piston in a cylinder.

Crossing my fingers it's something up top and not down low. I've got a spare block I'm planning on building after my house but I'd like to enjoy the car until I'm there.

Knock and lifter tick sound completely different. Go on youtube and familiarize yourself with differences, there is videos of dsm experiencing one and the other. Rod knock gets worse as rpm increases, lifter tick is generally inconsistent and is concentrated in the head, more of "tick" rather than a rattle or knock

I'll get on YouTube and check it out. I've heard lifter tick which is what I believe it sounds like but him telling me rod knock has me questioning... But at the same time I'm not sure where he got the rod knock idea from a shop?Guess? Not sure so I'll dig into a little more this weekend in between working on the house and see what I can figure out. I'll post back with results soon.

Wow just watched a good couple YouTube videos on DSM and other cars with rod knock. If all rod knock sounds that had it definitely can't be that then. I'm thinking gotta be lifter tick or maybe slight exhaust leak at the manifold. I know that can sometimes sounds like a tick as well. I've checked out the manifold(from what I can see) it looks good. Guess I've never ran into rod knock so I didn't know the noise to listen for. Thanks for the feedback.

Bought my 93 tsi with a "rod knock" and it was lifters. Got a set of 3g and when i was swapping them i found 3 lifters that were bad. Also do a boost leak test, fix the problems before they become headaches.

Get a 2 foot long piece of fuel line stick one end in your ear and move it arond till you can pinpoint the source of the noise. I bought a Grand Prix that sounded like it had a rod knock. Located the source of the noise with a piece of rubber fuel line. Turns out it was the flex plate.
