So I was driving home from work the other day, when on the highway, I shifted from 4th to 5th. But as soon as I hit neutral before 5th, my car shut off. I managed to roll off the nearest exit (thank god) and parked on the side of the road. I tried to start the car again, and it was turning over slowly as if it didn't want to start. It eventually started, and it was making a horrible knocking noise, I tried to drive a little seeing as I was already almost home, but when I shifted from first to second, it shut off again, not to mention the car was very hesitant to move. Oh and my oil pressure light was coming on and off the day before this happened, yet I have never heard any prior knocking at all before the incident. When I try to start the car now, it starts slowly, knocks really loudly, and cuts off. Hopefully the startup video uploads. Any help as to what this is and what to do would be greatly appreciated. Please keep the unnecessary negative comments to yourself.

The most likely causes are balance shafts and rods. You may have also skipped timing given it didnt like to run unless you seized a rod so bad it couldnt run. You wont know for sure until you look. I do want to ask why did you drive it given the light from the previous day?

It would only come on for a split second and would go away, maybe like twice. Like I said this all happened within 24 hours I was going to take the car to the shop on Friday (today) to get it looked at. I started it up again today to try and get s video from under the hood.

unfortunately that happens quite often. many people assume that a flickering light is a bad sender unit and ignore it until your rods are knocking. luckily for you it is a 420a car so the engines are easy to find. a 12 pack of beer and a few hours of work and you can easily swap the engine. but just for some advise i would pull an engine from a pick n pull and verify the timing marks are lined up and hasnt jumped time. 420a's are semi-interferance engines meaning the piston wont hit the valves but the valves will hit eachother. its common for wrecked cars to jump time if the engine stops too fast. good luck man, hope you get her fixed!

So I should just replace the whole motor huh? Thanks for the help guys, now I just have to find one. Any other (better) easy 420a swaps that I could throw in and have it fit the original tranny? Guess now would be the time to think about it since in replacing the motor anyways why not look for a better one?

op, you could buy a crank kit and repair it but the engines are so easily found and cheap it would just be faster and easier to replace the whole engine. sorry for the bad news!
Thanks a bunch. I'll keep looking for a motor. If only I could post in the wtb section, I'm looking for a 420a longblock in the CT area but nothing so far.
