Hey guys I just bought this Eclipse GS from an auto wrecker (seen it and knew I wanted it), it runs and the tran feels good in it (5 speed). But when I started it this last time there was a ticking noise which kinds of sounds like lifters (our old dodge caravan with 350000km on it did the same thing but ran great) which kind of makes me worried about driving it back home which is a hour drive. I'll probably do the timing belt just to be safe because I cant afford much right now. I'll try and post a video on my youtube channel with a link so you can hear it run. what should I look for/ expect with it? the engine bay is extremely clean and the car looks like its been taken care of, plus it has brand new cat back exhaust. what do you guys think? risk it or park it til I can find out for sure?

Was a write off this is the damage to the car

Looks like a good deal ... and a great project vehicle. Sat for a while so the lifters are going to tick until they get pumped up, or just a good head overhaul in order..while you're doing the belt...

How many Km's on it?

Good luck - DSM

you know i believe that too...run some lucas through the engine with a fresh oil change....if it doesnt go away you may need to do some fine tuning on valve clearance...also check spark plugs, it may sound weird but improper gap made those sounds on another project i once did...

@ DSM1G90
It has 134000 some miles which works out to be roughly 216000 km, car was definitely imported from the states. I hope I don't have to pull the head but if it come to that fine. Before I ran it the car was last run on November 11th so I'm thinking it might just need an overhaul sadly. You think I should risk driving it home?

@ Avefenix
I'll be sure to check the spark plugs when I do the compression and leak down tests. But I think for $770 I did pretty good. :thumb: How much does it cost to get the head rebuilt?

Thanx for the help and support guys!

You won't need to get the head rebuilt unless the valves are not sealing. A noise that is in the top end would likely be a collapsed lifter which would have to be replaced if it doesn't pump back up after the car has been ran for a while.

Valve lash isn't adjustable on a 4g63.

Would it be safe to drive it say...... 150km or so back home so I can work on it?
How much would the parts cost roughly?
And I've been checking out balance shaft eliminator kits but cant find one for a non turbo, but sine the engines are the same would a kit for a turbo model work for a non turbo?

It depends on what is actually wrong with it. If it is just a collapsed lifter than you can probably drive it for thousands of miles. If it is something like a balance shaft bearing or rod bearing than it might not make it 50 miles. I can't tell you which it is though. I personally wouldn't worry about the balance shaft elimination unless you are going to have the engine out. It doesn't make more horsepower like they claim when selling the kits.

Where is that wrecker located. Might have to go for a drive for some 2gb parts.

If I pass through there I can bring you my 1g head. The casting is screwed, but it's complete and the parts are good, and free.

ok well I think I'll risk it and hopefully wont #### the engine! I am planning on pulling the engine this summer if I can find a shop to do it in thats why I was asking about the eliminator kit. The place I got my car from has a DSM guy there who has 4 DSM's to himself and he told me with the eliminator kit he lost power, not much but a little and hasnt had a problem with the timing since.

The wreckers out in Clavet Saskatchewan about 12 min outside of Saskatoon down highway 16, he's got lots of engines and bodies (really gone through tho) plus he has 4 more new 2g talons in stock. (one of which is in my picture to the right of my car )
But ya if your coming by I'll take them for sure.

If you need other parts the PM me. And the gs 2.0 is a good starter for you. They do make pretty good power for being a nt 4cyl and then you could always throw on a turbo kit and go boost

Ya my goal is to put a turbo setup on it this summer if I've got the $ and rebuild it so I know it will be able to handle the turbo with out blowing up right off the bat. Thanx a bunch for the offer, when I need some stuff I'll be sure to send you a pm! thanx again.

Hopefully I'll get my mk2 supra back in action as well this summer but we'll see.

If you are considering that, check out this: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-turbo-system-intercooler/48231-installing-turbo-4g63-into-nt-4g63.html

About the balance shaft elimination, for me it's not about power (although it should free up a minuscule amount), its about removing a weak link in your system. I have personally spun my balance shaft bearings once and will NEVER run a 4G63 with balance shafts again.

Exactly the same for me, I don't care to much about power, its all about reliability for me, I would like to put the strongest parts i can get into the engine but not use all the power capable of getting out of it in fear of blowing it up. I'd be completely happy with say 350-400hp, I think with the stock turbo and a ported and polished head it should put me roughly around 225-230hp, plus I have stock intake setup so I'll swap that to forced induction with the typical k&n air filter which should give me an extra 10hp and that might be enough for me I don't know.

I'll check out that link, thanx for the help! :D

Holy s*it 9!'clipseDOHC you just saved my ass!! I had no clue I'd be looking at a whole new bottom end, would a guy be able to run a turbo set up bottom end (pistons, rods and crank bearings) with out a turbo for awhile or should I expect to start looking for parts now til i have all of them?
