Just recently purchased a 90 tsi that had been sitting for 2 years. i have since changed alot of parts with new and flushed everything and changed all fluids. But a few things that dont work or bother me are one the boost gauge doesnt wrk. And 2 it seems like the motor is getting really hot. but the temp gauge shows about half. i am thinking a new water pump but coolant looks to be flowing while running. Any suggestions or has anyone had this happen to them?

The top of the head is very hot almost where you cant touch it even the plastic cover of the plugs gets really hot..this is with it only running myabe 5 mins and the hood up.

Are you using the stock gauges for your readings? Also is it getting hot and spewing coolant out? Its common for the head to get very hot its aluminum and it will rapidly heat up. As suggested so you do know whats going on there for sure go to one of your local parts stores and get an autometer temp gauge, I would also suggest boost if its in your budget. That way you know for sure whats going on!

Mine runs very hot too after only a few minutes at idle. I honestly do not believe it is a problem as my temp gauge on the dash reads about half as well. Also added in the with the extreme heat from forced induction it is most likely normal. As for the boost gauge, it is in no way accurate and really only tells you if the engine is in vacuum of boost. It shouldn't shoot up too fast and should be somewhat closely related to the amount of throttle you are using. Being laggy is normal too for those gauges I have come to notice.

The factory "boost" gauge - I have put in quotes for a very good reason - is actually not a boost gauge at all. It is not an actual measurement of boost - it is the computer's estimate of the boost the engine should be making based on what it knows of the engine's rpm, load, fuel etc. You could have no turbo connected to the engine, and it would still indicate boost.

If you intend to do any mods at all to the car, if you even only intend to put a manual boost controller (MBC) on the car so you can run higher boost, get an actual boost gauge. They are easy to install - a ground, 12v switched power, and a dinky little plastic vacuum line to run to the engine compartment and tap into a vacuum source. You can even just install it temporarily so you can monitor boost after you make changes to make sure it is behaving appopriately and then take it out.

the 4g63 is just a hot running car if your temp gauge is telling you its fine it more then likely is. and as far as the stock boost gauge your better of not fixing it just get a aftermarket one because as eveyone is telling you the stock ones are garbage and dont measure correctly.
