90' oil cooler in a 2g. Pics or tips?

that is almost just like mine, but i run no fog lights cause that is where i put the lines for mine.
 
just want to post a correction to my_gst95. MachV sells oil filter brackets for the 7 bolts guys so they can run an external oil cooler. :thumb: :dsm:
 
No, I didn't feel the need to shorten them if the cooler is going to be routed in the front where it originally was on a 1g. Another week has past and still holding strong :thumb:

That is freaking beautiful!! But I thought a previous poster said that it was bad to have both lines on the down side, as it tends to trap air??
 
I got a 91 6 bolt and it came without the the oil filter bracket, I have a air cooled oil cooler in the garage, I was wondering if I could put that on insted of a water cooled oil cooler? Does anyone know if I could just get a 90 style filter bracket and then install the cooler?
 
Hey DSMu4ia what's the part number on that setrab oil cooler I would like to get that same one you have and maybe other people here would be interested to know what it is thanks.
 
Stupid question but I'm putting an oil cooler on my six bolt 2g and just want to know does it matter how the oil cooler is positioned... I see pics of the ports going up and to the side. Would it matter if I had the ports facing down?

Well, as far as oil coolers go, you generally have to make exceptions due to the small amount of space you have to work with. However, the optimal configuration for just about any radiator, condensor, cooler, etc. is to have it plumbed with the inlet (hot end) on top and the outlet (cool end) on the bottom.

Awesome image :thumb: That's exactly how I have mine plumbed. Now if you look around at some other threads, you will see talk of people having the input @ the bottom -- reason being that all of the air will bleed out the top, etc . . .

Well I actually contacted Setrab and talked to one of their techs. He said with the way our oiling system is setup, it doesn't really matter . . . the air is going to get purged out.

But back onto the topic of cooling . . . just kick back and think a bit . . . where does the water in our radiators come in from . . . ? That's right -- the top ;)
 
Just a comment about the image above. it shows the zig-zag tube through fins type of cooler which is the least effective type. You really want a sandwich type like the Setrab. the oil is forced through flat passages from one side to the other and then out.

Good call :thumb: . . . the input-ouput idea still applies though (i would think)
 
That picture only applies under stagnant conditions. While the car is moving and there is convective heat transfer through the cooler, heat transfer due to air density changes is insignificant. In other words, while air is flowing through the cooler, the air surrounding the cooler is constantly changing.

However, under stagnant condition (when the car is idling), air at the bottom of the cooler will heat up and rise as its density decreases. The rising hot air will continue to make contact with the cooler as it rises.

I still agree that the top to bottom flow is probably the best setup. I have also noticed many car manufacturers place both the inlets and outlets on the top of the cooler (automotive engineers usually know their shit... usually).

How about priming it...Do you wanna fill the lines and cooler with oil so it wont be circulating air?
 
So where can use draw oil from the housing to feed the turbo. I want to go with an external cooler but I dont want to feed my oil cooled turbo with oil from the head...

From the above picture: Can you draw oil from the gold plug on the left. Not the circled relief valve but the plug that faces toward the front of the car (I think it might be an allan bolt but it is hard to tell from the picture). What is the purpose of this plug?

That gold thing to the left of the temp relief valve is indeed an allen plug. You would want to hookup the feedline there as you stated.
