ok so i am not sure what crank walk is, but i heard its when the crank moves from left to right, and is it normal for a crank to move left to right about one eight of an inch when the crank timing belt pulley is off? i have the block out of the engine and i saw it moving not sure if once the crank timing belt pulley is on and tight if it will move still... let me know if this is normal please thanks

I heard that a stronger pressure plate can cause crankwalk. Not sure if its true or how it would but its something i read.

Its a auto tranny, and would changing out the main bearings help reduce that play you think? And if not then im atta luck need new crank? Is that crank walk?

Guys its an auto. I highly doubt it has walk. Its ###### got a billion miles on it and the bearings are worn. Is it possible for an auto to crankwalk sure but not common
Dacowgod pulled the engine from a 6-bolt auto DSM that he bought as a parts car not long ago....and it had enough thrust play to ruin the crank. Car was all-stock, believed to have never been tore down. So not only can it happen to autos, it can happen to 6-bolt autos.

Don't make generalized statements based on what it "should" be. It's a DSM- anything is possible.

^ That is actually the very first time I have ever heard of an auto having crankwalk..

I was about to say the same thing about auto's..But apparently I was either neive, or didn't know..

Huh?

Please, no I heard... or I read somewhere... contributions.

OP, do some searching...

Ok I ment I have the block out of the car, my bad

If end play is excessive and it's deemed "walked", then changing out the bearings will only buy you time before it happens again. A new block and crank is the only garunteed fix. You might want to source out a 6-bolt or a 7-bolt with a mulit-piece thrust bearing.

ok so i am taking the crank out of a block that i am not going to use, thats the block that the crank moves in, but the block still in the car that i will be pulling out to change out the crank on is the one i will be using in the car, i am only going to put the crank in this block. so i am hoping for the best that the one that i havent pulled out yet doesnt have crank walk, but you are saying that this is crank walk then right? when the crank is out you see if it moves? and its barely supposed to move, not a whole eight of an inch..

to the person with the video. Yeah that would be crank walk

wow,

Yeah the maximum allowable play there is ~.01000" so a hundreth,

If you want a real life example of this distance your looking at about 5 human head hairs stacked ontop of eachother.

With that type of play you could get some new stock end bearings and then check the play then.

Theres a set of flat feelers on MSC Direct (Metric or Standard) with a nice range of resolution feelers from .001" - .020" to check this down and dirty.

Beats buying a dial/digital indicator and mounting a custom fixture to check it.

So what I need to do is to buy crankshaft bearings? Then test it again? (sorry noob here)

This guy just said new block and crank. Thats what I would do. Spending $500 for a crank to have it happen again would just be stupid. No?

Why 6 bolt? Less likely to walk
Why 98-99? Split thrust bearings.
