I have a 97 2.4L GS Spyder and there is an awful ticking noise coming from the right side of the engine close to the timing belt.

I have checked the rod bearings, retorqued rod caps, and poured half of a quart of rislone into the engine.

I think it is too loud to be valve tick but let me know what you think

It could still be a lifter, when did this start? out of nowhere? or was it getting worse over time? have you drained your oil to look for metal particles? it could even be a balance shaft bearing going out or your crankshaft pulley separating, more information is needed to tell more about it, how does it sound when you give it some throttle?

Can you clarify " checked rod bearings"? You removed them for physical inspection?
What's the history on this car? Did you just get it?

I drained the oil and removed the oilpan and shook the bearing caps. No up and down play. I took off the bearing caps and removed the bearings which seemed to be fine. The journals were still deep enough to let oil flow and the bearings looked like they had hardly any wear. I bought the car a few months ago. When I bought the car it ran and was knocking but I figured it was just rod bearing needing to be replaced or a lifter just a bit gummed up. The car has 210,000 some miles on it. No turbo. It sat for about a year before I bought it.

It has been happening since I bought the car (about 2 months ago) and has not increased or gotten worse since I have owned the car. I changed the oil after I dropped the oil pan to check to see if the rod bearings were wearing at all. No metal specs in the oil. When given some throttle it speeds up but doesn't seem to get any louder. I will take a video of it ASAP.

Sounds like lifters ticking. 3g lifters are a good upgrade if you have the means.

This is a 4g64 sohc engine, 3g lifters will not work on these engines, they take a completely different type of lash adjuster, but these get dirt trapped in them and act up just like the 4g63 lash adjusters, I changed mine over the summer and its nice and quiet now.

The 3g 4g64 sohc lifters wont work?

Well the 3rd gen Eclipse 4g64 lash adjusters would work but they are no different than the 2nd gen ones, when people speak in the DSM world of 3g lifter upgrades they are not talking about lash adjusters from the 3rd generation CAR they are talking about adjusters that are the 3rd generation DESIGN of 4g63 lash adjusters.

Well I learn something new every day!

I've seen 30 thou lash on 4g69s and it didn't sound like that. I do not think it's lifters. Pull the wires or injector clips one by one with it running. If clacking drastically changes on one cyl you found your cylinder and something wrong with that reciprocating assembly.
