What are your goals? What do you want out of your car?

I had the 2.0 4G63 non-turbo engine for 7 years and I was very unhappy with the level of performance so I did a turbo swap. If you are just looking for a reliable commuter car and are not interested in performance, then you can keep the 2.0 non-turbo. Everyone is different and has different goals for their cars.

You have several thread asking pretty much the same thing about the 2.0 swap and the turbo swap but the real question is, What do you want?

Hope this helps!

well i want more performance im running a 1.8 and its just blah LOL and idk what to do since the motor is apart im figureing i might as well go big and turbo it.

Don't forget about the driveline. The non turbo trans might be ok for a little while with boost but they aren't as strong as a turbo trans. Then there's the clutch. Then you might want to get a different driver's side axle to help with torque steer. It'd probably just be cheaper to buy a car laready turbo'd and keep the 1.8 as a DD.

do the turbo swap or get a turbo car, in the end youll spend as much to turbo your car, maybe i did mine but i got a lot of parts for cheap.

^^ yea man if youre gonna get hook ups for the swap then go ahead and turbo it, but if ya arent then youre gonna be putting alotttt of money down for your toy and itd be cheaper to buy a turboed car already. remember it isnt just throwin a turbo on it, alot of the other stock parts will not hold up with the turbo.

hope this helps man. goodluck!

As always, we'll suggest to go turbo.

However, if this is going to be your first time with hands on experience with these cars, I honestly wouldn't recommend turboing it right off. I'd urge you to do the following.

Build the internals and everything for a turbo in the future. Go ahead and get your forged rods/pistons and all that... but don't worry about installing the turbo CAMS and such yet. Build the engine, drop it in N/A, and drive it. Get used to it and work on it over a bit of time. Once you learn about the engine and have experience with it, the work you've previously done to it will all be available and ready for you to turbo it.

This will allow you to learn, get experience, and enjoy all that is the 4G63. ;D

+1 on what XiKeiyaZI said. If you aren't an expert or don't already have some background with boosted cars, stick with the N/T cars for a while and really get to know them.

I got a N/T 2.0L Laser not running and rebuilt the head and replaced a good amount on it. Now I'm on my second N/T 4G63 with a non-running Talon I picked up cheap. I plan on getting into the turbo DSMs eventually, but would really like to be familiar with the basics first.

I've learned that patience is key when it comes to cars. If you overwhelm yourself with an overly complex engine, you're going to frustrated.

Keep us informed on where you go with the project. Good luck!

Research is key. I love my n/a but man it is slow. ROFL I long for the day my car will be turbocharged.

go turbo IMO there's no fun in n/a

Oh come on now, there's plenty of fun with the N/A cars! I know that when I went through my endeavor or swapping the 1.8 to a 2.0, I LOVED my car. I knew that it wasn't turbo'd and would NEVER be as quick as a Boosted DSM, but it had plenty of get-up-and-go to it and I absolutely loved it.

The only other fact I can throw in is that with a Turbo'd DSM there is a LOT more maintenance. There is plenty enough alone with the N/A 4G63, but add a Turbo and a charge system in the mix and you've only multiplied your work effort.

Oh come on now, there's plenty of fun with the N/A cars!

Going to have to disagree. I still loved my car when it was N/A but it is so much better now that its boosted. But it all depends on the your goals. If you just want a commuter car, then stick with what you've got. If you want a performance car, then do the swap. Having a stock turbo setup on a DSM is no more work then a stock non-turbo DSM. They will both need the same 20 year maintenance. Its when you get bigger injectors and turn up the boost that maintenance becomes more of an issue on the turbo models. The stock turbo setup is made for reliability.

Hope this helps!

i have a 1.8 and a 2.0t.... everyday i drive the 1.8 my soul dies a little. i love my boosted talon. i would just buy a turbo car. keep the 1.8 as a dd.

have fun.

It's all personal opinion. I have fun with N/A cars in the dirt almost weekly. They're less complex, have less things to break, and are cheap.

BUT, the MR2 I had was nothing short of mind-blowing every time that CT26 spooled.

I think cars are fun no matter which way you slice it. I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you choose :thumb:

Not in a dsm... N/A cars don't really get fun fun till around 3.0l with high comp. I think the smallest engine I ever had fun with n/a was a 300zx nismo edition.

That said, go turbo, boost is fun and you will love it.

You two are just downers. ;P

alright well lets put it this way if i go na what could i dof or more power same with turbo

n/a
1 race header
2exhaust
3 intake
what else and will i need a retune

but sinc eim tearing it down and working crank upo which root makes more sense

You won't need a re-tune for those bolt-on mods you listed. You aren't messing with fuel or timing or anything like that.

For mine I just bolted on a K&N intake and hacked the air can using this write up as a guide... 1G NT Air Canister Mod

And I got a hold of some 2.5 inch exhaust piping that I wrapped after the cat to the muffler. I have a no-name muffler on there too that keeps things quiet. You can also hollow out the catalytic converter. If you have emissions testing where you live, that won't be an option.

Saved a bit of weight by gutting the back of the car, jack, spare tire, carpet, etc. I also removed the whole A/C system too. Every little bit helps.
BTW, remove the spare and the jack at your own risk. I never drive the car farther than 20 miles from my apartment, so I can grab a bus back if my car gets a flat.

Other then that, there doesn't seem to be much more you can do w/o doing a turbo swap. If you do keep going from this point with your N/A, you're going to end up pouring a lot of money and time into something that will probably be pretty quick, but for the same money, you could've just bought a turbocharged DSM and had a faster ride to begin with.

9!'clipse is the one to ask about upgrading a N/T. He had one and spent quite a bit of time and money trying to make it faster only to end up with, what seems to me, as lame results. Kudos for trying and being the guinea pig though ;)

Just experiment with the basic bolt-ons and free upgrades and enjoy your N/T for what it is. It's a great car even if it isn't capable of neck-snapping speeds.
