420A 420a Rebuild

So in my 99 GS i have a 420a with some slight mods when i bought the car. It is obvious that the person who owned the car before me beat the hell out of it because i can feel that im not getting all the power fro mthe engine that I am supposed to be getting. I am planning on swapping this engine out for another 420a and rebuild the other one to be able to house a turbo (i.e. gs-t transformation). Any thoughts on how i should first go about this? I have done some reasearch and seen that a evo 16g would be best suited for this N/A engine. but any other help on would be great.
 
im in the process of rebuilding my 96 gs right now:thumb: if you want you can check out my post in the newbie member intro forum ive got a whole bunch of pics posted. its titled project 420a. af far as a turbo conversion, depending on how much boost youre hoping to acheive and also your budget, theres a few different directions you could take. forged pistons and rods arent a bad place to start, as well as a forged crank. and anything else thats worn out in the engine will also need to be replaced. i spent around $2000 on a stock rebuild for all of the parts. if theres anything youre wondering about just lemme kno
 
dude thanks so much for the help im looking to achieve around 15-25psi hopefully and i know very little about N/A engines im going to deffinatly check out your thread and get an idea!
 
yea anything over 8 maybe 10lbs of boost and youre gonna go with lower compression ratio pistons 8.8:1 should do ok. definately go with forged if youre planning on going up to 15-25 lbs. you will probably want bigger injectors as well. glad i could be of some help lemme know what ya think of my project so far :D

You won't need a forged crank. As far as I have heard no one has EVER broken one of our cranks because of too much power.

Also, it shouldn't cost you $2000 for a stock rebuild. I would venture more around the $700-$1000. I built my forged long block with new everything except cams for less than $2000.

Personally, if you are going turbo, spend the extra money on forged pistons and rods. It will not only give you peace of mind, but the ability to make more power once you get addicted to boost. Think of it this way: A set of new stock rods, pistons, and rings will probably run you $300-$350 and you are now limited to how much power you can make. For $350 more ($700) you can get a set of Wiseco pitons + rings / Eagle Rod combo and be able to boost until your heart is content ( provided you have the fuel management to back it up).

$350 should be easy to save. I'm not sure of your age, but if you are younger ( teens- early twenties) that should be attainable in one paycheck. Basically you have to wait 2 extra weeks...
 
as far as budget goes i make about 300 a week working at mc donalds haha but i dont have many bills. i do go to school but im working mainly on my tax money to supply for the parts. im deffinatly going to look into the forged pistons and rods without a doubt and deff check into the crank (whether i need it or not) just in case. as far as turbo. the compression ratio is the only thing i need to work on and get it figured out then putting it together should be no big deal

yes youre right a forged crank might be a little overkill. not to mention pricey... but i did have to drop 2000 on a rebuild but i forgot to mention the machining i had done as well. a .040 over rebore, bake and blast, plus i needed to get the crank worked on. i also needed new cams. that might be why mine ran up so expensive. im just glad im not paying labor charges LOL.
 
also noticed there is a short block and long block... difference? i would assume long block is a stronger block compared to the short block

Short block is just the block, rods, and pistons, and crank... basically no head... long blocks have heads on them and are almost ready to be dropped in.

LONG BLOCKS INCLUDES. LOWER BLOCK, CRANKSHAFT, CONNECTING RODS, PISTONS, RINGS, MAIN BEARINGS, ROD BEARINGS, CAMSHAFT, TIMING BELT, SPROCKETS, LIFTERS, ROCKER ARMS, CYLINDER HEAD, OIL PUMP, OIL SCREEN, AND GASKET SET,ect...
 
ahhh ok so startiong with a shortblock would mean building me building it myself... sounds good to me which is what i want to do anyways thanks again guys:cool:
