Given that I haven't taken my engine apart yet, what are some indications that I might need to get the cylinders bored out? (so I know ahead of time if I need to order oversize pistons/rings)
It's a stock rebuild of a 420a. The car is a 1998 with 100k miles, and I lose a quart of oil between changes (but I can't tell where it goes)

If you haven't taken the engine apart yet, do a leakdown test. That'll tell you where you're losing oil. 100K miles isn't enormously high, or really low either: it's kind of in the gray zone, so you're best bet is to find out where you're losing oil before taking any further actions.

When the engine is apart, take the block to a machine shop and have them measure the bore. If the cylinder walls are damaged, or they're tapered or out of round, you'll definitely need them bored.

In all likelihood, you'll probably end up just needing the cylinders honed, in order for you to drop fresh OE pistons and rings in there. A quart of oil between changes is somewhat a lot, but there are plenty of places for that oil to be going, other than past your piston rings. Good luck.

It all looks good to me; although, I've never heard of that particular seller on eBay (which doesn't really mean much). If you'd rather buy those gaskets through a vendor for a similar price, look into either Howell or Concept Illusions: they both will get you what you need.

I know for a fact you can get oversize stock pistons. If you need a link I will find one for you. The 2.4 is the block you cant get oversize for YET. Do not waste money on forged pistons if your not going to turbo or performance build the engine.

Edit: Here is just one site for cast oversize pistons

Terry

You're right, Terry - I must have been thinking of the 2.4L block when I said that.

I did a compression test and it looks like my 4th cyl has a ring or cylinder wall problem
The compression went from ~150 to ~240 when I put a cap of oil in there
All other cylinders were >225
Looks like I need to re-ring it... should be fun :p

Any suggestions on where to get a new timing belt for a good price?

Cylinder compression should be anywhere in between 170psi and 225psi with no more than a 25% difference in pressure between cylinders.

Parts Dinosaur is a good place to get a replacement timing belt. They also sell teniosners and idler bearings.

+1 for the mechanical tensioner conversion kit :thumb:
