I'm currently rebuilding my 420a after i spun 2 rod bearings pretty badly, I plan to do the rebuild with new full stock internals (mine have been overheated and I don't want to reuse them) and Im going to have the crank polished up and milled down to use oversize bearings obviously. does anyone have any tips for taking off the crank girdle and timing gear, it's been quite a pain so far. also, i'm tight on cash right now does anyone know of a cheaper rebuild kit im looking at about $200 for rods and $125 for pistons and rings (my engine does not need to be bored it still makes good compression)

Use one of these to remove the crankshaft sprocket. It will fall apart if you try to use a 3 jaw puller like some people do. Occasionally it will be stuck so badly that the threads will get ripped right out of them. At that point I just tap to the next largest bolt size and light up the torch.

Removing the bedplate (girdle) is pretty simple. With the engine on the stand, just turn it upside down and take all the bolts loose. It should lift straight off. It might be a little stuck if someone went crazy with sealant in the past but a rubber mallet will be persuasive.

If you are trying to do the job cheap look for used rod and piston sets on ebay. Probably can find a set for between 100-200 This will also save you the money of having the machine shop install the pistons on the rods for you. Otherwise you have to heat the rod end to get it to expand and slip the wrist pin through before it cools.
