My eagle talon ESi (420a model) has been overheating the last month. No leaks anywhere, I replaced the water pump exactly a year ago, changed out the coolant, check fans to see if they even turned on, changed out coolant, replaced temp sensor (gave me a code for it), and replaced thermostat and I still overhearing. All except flushing out the radiator but the radiator seems to be just fine I don’t think it’s clogged. But if this helps at all when I turn on my heat the cars temp gauge goes up higher unless I turn it back off. Might be the water pump going out again? Any help would be awesome.

Can you verify the temperatures with a digital thermometer or some other way to measure the temperature other than your vehicles temp gauge? Can you also verify the thermostat is opening and flowing coolant through the radiator?

It almost seems like a faulty gauge because turning on the cabin heater should drop temperature a little bit not raise the temperature.

well it smells like coolant and even coolant from the reservoir gets drained a little more and more. But I haven’t tried looking at the coolant seeing if it flows. Do I just leave it open and just see if it’s starts flowing?

But I could try replacing the temp gauge even after I changed the temp sensor.

If the upper radiator hose gets hot then the thermostat is opening. If you smell coolant then there is a leak... unless you spilled some recently. You can add some UV dye to the radiator and run the car, then check with a black light to see if you spot a coolant leak. Since you smell coolant but don't see evidence, leak is likely a pinhole or in some place where it evaporates before it shows (water pump seal, radiator, bad rad cap, etc.).

Here is what I would do if I was troubleshooting this problem.

Verify there are no leaks.
Make sure your coolant system is full, not just the surge tank.
Start the car and let it idle to operating temperature with the radiator cap off to see if the coolant is flowing.
If you have flow reinstall the cap, then using a digital temperature gun verify your gauge is reading accurately by checking the temperature at the thermostat housing.

If the above checks out wait for your fans to kick on to see if it pulls the temperature down. Fans should kick on around 215 and should pull down to 185. I can't remember the exact temps, it might be 210 and this is assuming you put a 185 thermostat in.

A few things to look for. Does your surge tank fill up with coolant and does it push out the overflow? Do you have to add coolant often? Do you smell coolant from the overflow area? Could be a head gasket but more then likely a bad radiator cap. If the cap is bad your system won't hold the correct pressure and will start to boil off the coolant. Which in turn will contribute to over heating.

If you smell coolant and your losing coolant, check and make sure your heater core isn't leaking. That's one suggestion I haven't seen yet. Look on the passenger side and make sure carpet isn't wet or any drips hanging from the heater box. If you can pressurize the cooling system with it cold of course that'd help you more.

Hey guys! Sorry for the late response been busy lately. Changed out the rad cap and it’s still over heating so that’s awesome. Anyways I have some videos of the cars rad fan turning on super late. As way over the middle where it’s supposed to be. I don’t know what that could be. Bad rad fan? Sticking relay? The temp sensor was just replaced so I don’t think it’s that. Thermostat and rad as I said has been replaced. Have yet to check for coolant leaks with a tester. But even if it was a small leak I don’t think it would be over heating how it is.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=881UO5VFRDU

The pressure test isn't just to check for exterior leaks. Loss of pressure without identified leak could mean a cracked block or headgasket sealing issue. You can rent a tester if needed.

update:

Replaced the gauge temp sensor. Still having the issue. But I feel like I should have added this from the start. The car is also misfiring. The plugs are good and the wires even checked compression all looks good. Might be an injector or some type of air leak. Cylinder 4 to be exact, haven’t checked the injector yet when I go to work tomorrow I’ll use my lunch to check it out. Regardless can a misfire cause this problem? I’ve tried everything, yet to try pressure test. Anything more suggestions would be so helpful.

Edit: little more info. When I turn on the heat the gauge goes up, also checked the temp everything looks good, the fans do turn on but 3/4 of the way then back to middle, and repeat. I guess the only pattern I see is is when I speed up it goes straight to the middle.

It is conceivable that a misfire could cause increased temps - if you are extremely lean that cyl will burn hotter. It could also cause internal damage if its been happening long or extreme enough. I would pull plug #4 and see how it looks - if it is white with ash and deposits. Compare to the other plugs. Won't solve your problem, but it might tell you to some degree how severe the misfire is.

I would resolve the misfire issue before pursuing the overheating. You may find the two are linked.
