420A 420a N/T Burning Oil

Hey guys,

Long story kind of short, this car I am working on now was my old car and ever since it has been smoking/burning oil. Around a quart every 2 weeks. We sent it to our mechanic because it was no longer my car and my step cousin took it over. Mechanic changed out everything he could think of besides ripping apart the head. He started to say it would keep taking more stuff to fix so we said we'll take it back and I'll fix it.

The car is in the driveway with the head off. It has a MLS Permatorque Felpro HG which means the mechanic was actually in there earlier. The head looks to be resurfaced but some head bolts are stretched. There's no coolant in the oil, so no pushing coolant.

Only thing else I can think of is bad valve seals or someway for oil to get down into the combustion chamber. Next step for me is to pull out the springs and valves and check them out.

Any one have any ideas or had this problem before? I'll get pics up later of the head and block to see if anyone else can see anything I'm not.

I've had a couple 1gs with bad valve seals, and alot more other older hig mileage cars.

Its either the valve seal, or the the oil control rings on the pistons. I'd bet its the valve seals.

If the heads off replace the valve seals and hope for the best, unless you want to pull it all apart and refresh the motor.

Carbon build it up on the valves would indicate bad valve seals.

should of ran a compression test for starters if its all ok then you go to the next step im betting valve stem seals

look at plugs: Oily or sooty black=rings with the tops of the pistons all gooey black. Clean=valve seals.

Strange that the head was pulled for some work on it and seals weren't replaced...or, they weren't installed correctly

if you get to the valves, check on the condition of the seals. If brittle, they're definitely gone and leaking oil past them.

Yeah I would definitely put my money on valve seals. I've had to do the in just about every higher mileage car I've owned.
