420A 420a burning oil, don't know where from

As the title says, 2g GS is burning oil. I’m trying to figure out if it’s the head gasket, head, or rings. I have a feeling it’s the head gasket as it had a slight overheating issue but I always shut it off before it could get too hot.

Is there a way I can test where it’s burning oil from without tearing the motor apart?

I took the spark plugs out and they’re clean and I plan doing a compression test today to test for head gasket or blow by.

Is it burning oil or is the level just dropping? The fact your plugs are clean sounds like it might be leaking oil as opposed to burning it. About the only way you can "burn" oil but not see anything on the plugs is if the exhaust valve guide seals are leaking which burns off in the exhaust but never sees the cylinder.

Unless the engine has been rebuilt before most your seals are 25+ years old and leaking a significant amount of oil is pretty common.

Is it burning oil or is the level just dropping?

Well, it always has a small oil leak but at idle I can see smoke coming out of the exhaust and smell burnt oil so I figured it’s most likely my top end

Probably old valve seals or seized pistons rings. Let us know the compression test results. Either way it's probably due for a cylinder head servicing.
