Its getting cold here, and it seem that im grinding going into second when the car is not warmed up all the way.Does anyone else have this problem or is it my syncos going out???

its hard for me to believe that the BG will make that big of a difference. i had the pennzoil synchro fluid in there which is supposed to be the same as the GM synchro fluid.

i suppose switching the fluid AGAIN is still cheaper than pulling the tranny apart... anybody had a similar experience remedied by BG fluid?

Yeah, it may or may not work. I'd definitely give it a shot before taking the tranny apart. My other suggestion would be to make sure your clutch is fully disengaging. It's hard for me to understand why 2nd gear would grind only when it's warmed up. I would have thought that moving to a thicker tranny fluid shoulda done the trick.

Chris

yeah, thats why i tried the thicker fluid....

maybe i need to bleed the clutch cylinder? what about adjusting the clutch pedal?

also have metal bushings on order for the shifter base (symborski kit), thinking of ordering bushings from Extreme Motorsport that replace some rubber bushings along the shift cables...

Here are some suggestions for you. If you have the time, give these a try and let me know the results.

1) Warm the car up to operating temp... drive it around for a bit until it starts to grind in 2nd gear.
2) Turn the car off and try to shift. a) Does it slide right into 2nd gear with no problem? b) If not, try depressing the clutch and shifting. This will help rule out the clutch as a cause of your problem.
3) If you feel comfortable doing this, I'd recommend popping your hood and removing the shifter cables from the tranny. Try shifting the transmission manually from under the hood. It will take some thinking to figure out which gear is 2nd, but hopefully you're a smart guy. This will help rule out the shifter and shifter cables as causes of your problem.

Let me know what you find.

Chris

OKAY! Everytime I shift into second gear, I get a huge GRIND usually, sometimes it doesn't happen, but usually. Now I was told by the previous owner that all I need to do is get a very strong synchro kit together, and just have that replaced. Any other suggestions out there? I am not looking to replace the whole tranny. Also, if all I need it a Synchro kit, where can I pick one up? And cheap? Thanks yall.

Yea, i got the same problem. Im replacing my 1st and 2nd gears because they are both grinding and also getting TRE double syncros. You should be able to get syncros at nearly any parts dealer.

hmm would replacing the tranny with a working one for 600 sound good. with taller gears and double synchors ? i have a few jdm trannies that im trying to sell with such gears and synchros. let me know if your interested we'll work something out.

hmm yeah i didnt notice the S in gearS. But are you sure the galant didnt have a taller 1st and 5th gear? I didnt think they had double synchs but I was more replying abou the galant. For some reason ive thought some of the vr4 galants had both 1st and 5th. Bah, beats me.

Just finished putting in a act 2600 in my gst. It works perfect in all the gears but for some reason my tranny grinds now when trying to put it in second. I have been going from 1st to 3rd to keep from grinding but that sucks. I have also installed a new slave cylinder and a 1g clutch rod. We are taking out the middle console to see if I bent or broke something on the shifter and we are going to adjust the clutch pedal assembly for a little more engagement. If I am sitting still and pull my shifter hard to the left before down it will go in w/o grinding. but if I am moving theres no chance. For the love of god please HELP!!  :dsm:

Or not.

First check the shift cables to make sure they're adjusted right. VFAQ.com has the details in the "shifter" section.

Make sure the clutch is DISengaging completely. If it engages right off the floor that will make it hard to shift. Adjust it so there's at least an inch of play before the clutch starts to grab.
HTH

Is there anything i could do to help this problem at all? It only happens when the engine and tranny are cold...any thing at all to ease that nasty sound?:laser:

What gear oil are you using?

-Regular 80-90w
-Synthetic

I use GM Syncromesh I have not a single problem with it, and it get's pretty cold around here, probably your 2nd Gear Synchro it's really worn out now...

well i must be honest with you....sigh i only had the car for less than a year and never changed the gear oil...also...143k on it LOL

^ Pennz doesn't list a weight. It's a lot runnier than stock. And it's the _same_ as GM, other than the $4 less a bottle.

BG Synchroshift is also highly recommended, but a little harder to find if you don't have speed shops in your area.

Pennz is under $5 a quart at AutoZone.
