i have a 98 eclipse gs....the wheel bearings have worn out and i was wondering if they were pressed in, or they just sit in place, i am wonder so i know if can do it myself, or i have to pay to have them pressed in?
thank you for any reply:dsm:

If they're anything like GSX bearings, they're a one-piece unit that bolts onto the knuckle and the axle splines line up on the splines on the inside of the bearing. Here's the problem: If they're seized onto the axle and won't come off by normal methods (using the proper pulling tool, giving a couple whacks with a sledgehammer, etc.) then the only way to get it off is to using a cutting torch, which will destroy the axle in the process. This has happened to me twice at the dealership. One time, the wheel speed sensor got in the way and was destroyed too, so that's something to watch out for. The second time the tech was able to save it.

Last time I went to my parents' house, I found one of my reciepts from the dealership, so if you get stuck with a worst case scenario, here's what you may be looking at:

1. Wheel bearing (aka hub assembly) Part #: MB892400 Price: $183.45
2. (Right Rear) Aftermarket axle Part #: MR176803 Price: 160.14
3. Labor Price $162.50

Total: $506.09

Don't just go ordering those part numbers without double-checking them with the dealership, though. They change things every once in a while and things MAY be different for your particular car.

Bearings aren't something that I would recommend doing on your own unless you have access to a lift, air tools, the right puller tool for the bearing, and possibly a torch. If you go with a professional mechanic or dealership, make sure they have experience in doing something like this.

front or back... they are not pressed in...usually you take the spindal off and get new bearings...try tighting them up...get a big wrench and put some levrage into it(couple turns)and see what happens...I thought I needed new bearings but put a wrench to it and it worked...just an idea...if anything, just buy a new spindal from a junk yard it will save you money.

Great post, very informative... but uh, there aren't any axles for the bearings to seize onto; I know, I know, but it's the price we pay for having FWD. ;)

I've had access to the rear wheel bearings a few times when I swapped my drums for discs. MrBoxx was right when he said they're a single unit. You'll have to replace the whole hub assembly in order to replace those bearings. It really isn't difficult, and the assembly is rather simple in design, so I can't imagine it's too expensive.

To get to it, all you need to do is take off your rear wheels, remove the brake calipers, then remove the wheel assembly. The brake calipers are held on by two bolts in their brackets, and the wheel assembly is held on by four bolts (these are a pain to get off, so have a breaker bar on hand) from the back. After you get all that off, I believe the hub will just fall off.

The part numbers vary depending on whether or not you have ABS (although I bet you do), so...

MR272114 (95-10/98 w/ ABS)
MR455808 (11/98+ w/ABS)

Thank you for the clarification. I wasn't sure how different the N/T models were. I figured they'd more or less use the same part to keep costs down, but apparently Mitsubishi's not that bright.

The only difference between the two assemblies is bascially just a hole for the axle. I'm not sure if the AWD bearings would even be compatible otherwise. One of the first things I noticed about 2G DSMs is that RS/GS/GS-T suspension parts are nearly identical; it's the GSX that's the oddball.

thankyou for all the replys, it doesnt sound to tough, and i have all the tools, so maybe i will do it on my own, im gunna get a price, and see if my friend who works at mitsu can get me a deal! then i will decide on what to do from there, i let u guys know.

front or back... they are not pressed in...

Front wheel bearings have a high press fit and will not come out without a press. Rears in the AWD are slip fit or very loose press and come out easy.

can these bearings be regreased? I'm assuming the new one's come with the hub/lugs and everything? We had one howling, so removed it yesterday (the 4 bolts were stuck good). We pulled the bearing off the hub and it has white grease in there, but the grease is pretty dry (cracked grease?!). The bearings don't look bad though. I don't want to spend $120 for a new unit if we can regrease and put it back together.......

BTW - we have FWD, so no rear axle to contend with.....
