2g auto tranny doesnt shift into low when coming to a stop..

Title says it. 2g awd tsi auto. I bought the car a year ago and its been doing it since then. I didnt notice it at first because it had alot of other problems. It just seemed really laggy for a turbo car.

I then began paying attention and counting downshifts from overdrive drive 2nd. If im running 65mph and then slow down to a stop and start over it pulls in 2nd. I can manually select L everytime and it downshifts fine. But If I engage into D or OD it never starts off in first. Ive searched and found one similar case from 2004. It didnt state wether it was a 1g or 2g.

Has anybody else had this issue? There was a TSB out in 95 that was similar to this but the car has the updated software flash.

im having the same problem with my 98 GST. but it seems ok if i drive with the over drive off when coming to a stop. i think it could be a software issue, or it could not be enough line pressure? ive also read that the cooler could be plugged up with junk too. also a bad TPS will mess a lot of stuff up to. let me know if you find anything!

Will do. I have a new TPS but the tranny cooler has a pretty bad leak that needs fixed so Ill flush it along with the tranny and post up results. I hope its something this simple

It should start off in 1st if you are stopped for long enough..But it could be a 2g thing. Try coming to a stop sign or light and taking the o/d off letting it downshift and then using the brakes to slow to a stop.. hessitate for a second or two before getting back on the gas and taking off, notice if it starts in 1st or second, still with the o/d off till you reach appropriate speeds or know your in third and need to shift..

Also the 2g did not come with the power/economy switch right?

Or you could order the roadsurge auto shift box two button shifter.

My rs does something similar to that. It wont down shift when i slow down for curves unless i give it alot of throttle (when comming to a complete stop it usually downshifts). We had the transmission rebuilt when we got the car, and we have two computers for it. It does the some with both computers. This has been a problem since the first time i have driven it.

Well I also have a 99 Avenger with the 2.5 v6, and auto trany. I'm pretty sure that it goes into 1st, no I'm not HMMMM..It actually may not. If I drive it tonight ill let ya know. But also the 1st gear in the dsm auto tranny is super low, that's probly why it doesnt like to go into 1st..Even when I manually downshift all the way going into 1st even at 5mph before stopping is really hard. Then when I take off its even pretty short, but the higher you go in 1st the harder the 1-2 shift is. But 2-3 3-4 shift even when at high rpm's isnt that bad..

Mine definately doesnt shift into 1st from D or Overdrive. It takes off in 2nd and is verry sluggish. If I grab 1st manually it will go and it takes off like a rocket. Im hoping a tranny flush will fix things up. It might just need a rebuild it rolled 140k but has always been maintained I have the service records

1.2.3(D), 4(o/d).. Doesnt like to come out of third huh, like never or just sometimes?

Even with the t25 is still sluggish starting in second? I did drive a 98 gsx with a t28 and it was a pooch taking off too, even launching.. So it could just be the 2g. I bet it does take off like a rocket when in 1st..
I'll admit I'm pretty sluggish starting in 2nd, but it does get up prettty quick I guess..I also have 16g though..

it happens when i slow down alot to turn. like from 50 to 15 to make a sharp turn, it doesnt accelerate out of the turn the way it should.

Take o/d off when making turns like that...And you are correct it doesnt accel out of turns as it should. If you could go into 2nd at least it might help. But you have an auto, most times it will only go to 3rd,(o/d off). All you have to do is mash on the gas, it will automatically downshift for you. Keep in mind this will affect your gas milage. But taking the o/d off might help if you don't already use that method..

most of the time it doesn't bother me because i like just cruising around. when i really want to go i floor it anyway, but with some of the modifications that i did i cant turn the overdrive off, it always stays on.

Idk about the NT cars but the turbo cars dont go over about 25 in 1st. I do know there are some recalls and TSBs out on the turbo cars and NT cars for a software update. Customers complained about sluggish acceleration after coming to a stop. Funny thing is according to the shop I took it to mine has the software update. Im thinking it may just be time for a rebuild.

On another note is it possible this could be Torque Converter issues? This is my first auto car ever. So its a little new to me. Im always used to clutch if it slips replace it. Much cheaper etc
