Been researching about these cams for a while now (by the way, these are BC cams) and I've seen a lot of different set-ups that concerns the supporting modifications for these. I'm quite a little bit confused on what and if some supporting parts are necessary to make it reliable enough to use.

Here are some parts upgrade that I can think of on top of my head that may or may not need:

- valve springs
- retainers
- valves
- valve guides

I just need people's insights on some other parts that you guys can recommend so that I can safely use these cams. I know some supporting parts are not really necessary if I just want to make decent power on the streets and I'm thinking just roughly between 240-260 whp on an EVO 3 16g. Just a heads up for people who want to chime in on this topic, I'm not putting this on a stock engine, its mildly modified and I could list the parts but I just think its irrelevant to the subject at hand but it this makes any relevance at all, the intake and exhaust have been ported. Also, I'm not that much concerned about drivability and/or idle. I'm not asking for professional help, just average Joes that have a little bit of DIY experience. I just want to have a fun car and not looking to kill V8's (though I know it can be done :D).

There are no right or wrong opinions here, what matters is what works for all of us. I apologize for the long paragraph. Thanks for your future comments.

Just a little FYI regarding the springs, the beehive valve springs really seem to stabilize the valve in the upper RPM range and prevent them from dancing around in the seats. May want to check a set out vs. the standard style to match the cams.

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. I've heard good things so far about the beehive springs. As for the valves themselves, I'm still contemplating whether to use stock and have them cryo treated or to go for oversized ones though that could also mean I would need to machine the heads which I'm not comfortable with. Is there any nitride valves out there in stock configuration? All I've been seeing so far are the oversized.

Right now, I think I want to switch over to FP2 cams because of their popularity and reliability and idle issues. Not that I'm saying BC's are bad but the reason why I'm using it is because I only got it from a guy who blew his engine running 25 psi because his internal wastegate failed and for a mere 100 bucks for the pair.

springs and retainers are a must for 272's...you probably don't need new valves or guides but if you want some bronze guides and stainless valves its not a bad idea to go with those. also, MOST importantly, if you are using stronger springs and bigger cams you will need to switch over to a higher strength timing belt. the oem belt isn't made to take the added force of the higher pressure springs and larger cams

260whp isn't too lofty of a goal. If you're not going to be revving the car out too high (over 8k) you could use some Evo 8/9 valve spring and retainers. That's the route I'm taking. I have a set of Comp 10200's (essentially FP2s) and will be using the Evo springs and retainers. They have a semi-beehive style and have retainers that are a lot lighter (3.5g vs. 14g IIRC).

You really don't need 272's to hit 260whp, or even 300whp. You may be happier with a set of 264's or a 264/272 combo.

And for those interested, here's a pic.

Thanks for your kind insights knochgoon and 6bolt. I just want to be realistic, I mean I do plan on using those upper RPM range that the 272 pairs are built for. I'm a rev happy guy if I feel like going out to the tracks and scaring some wannabes on open roads. The 260 whp is what I'm saying as a modest opinion, and IF installing an electronic boost controller can bump that up too 300, then my actual goal can be surpassed. In all honesty, I do not know what the limits of the stock ECU is and if a simple SAFC-II parameter will get me close to 300 then this is as safe as I can get without blowing up the engine.

Which leads me to think if the E316g is capable enough to do this and if not, a PTE 50 trim turbo is also another option for me.

Knochgoon, thanks for that info on the EVO 8/9 set-up. If you say that this is a bolt-on upgrade then this is something that I don't need to contemplate anymore.
