2.4 Liter Non-turbo No Love?

I've noticed theres little to no love for our 2.4 liter non turbo engines. Being that there was only 18% of them made, i know finding information on them is a real pain in the ass...

Ive done alot of searches on the 2.4 like timing belt/water pump changes etc and it seems to always be a dead end search for this engine. I guess what im asking is where is the love? Anyone know much about this engine or could point me into the right direction?

BTW i got quoted 275 to do the water pump/timing belt on my 98 GS Spyder which i dont think is a bad deal at all...by a professional shop and me supplying the parts. What you guys think?

get ride of the single cam head. throw a 1g dohc head on , 16g , injectors , fuel pump , I know there are set of oem cam gears that you have to run in order to make the swap work with the 4g64 crank sprocket so the timing is correct. Then ecm link a tune and you will be good to go. Keep searching cause I know there is a complete list of everything you need and how to install it.

My buddy had a 3G with a 2.4. He turbo it 18-20 psi on stock internals with a 16g and it ran high 11s for close to 2 years before it blew. Then he did the 7 bolt block/evo head swap which I belive got him in the high 10s but he ended up blowing it up and parting out the car.

I recently purchased a 99 GS Spyder, to replace my ESi as my DD. My fiance has a 3rg gen 2.4, and I have to say. I love the power/torque a 4g64 has versus the 420a.

I myself have tried finding a lot of information on the 4g64, but it is not as popular as the 4G63. Unless you are turboing, and dropping the 4G63 head on it.

I've also considered turbo-ing the car, but the motor is a bit on the high-mileage side, and don't want to sacrifice reliability. Though, if I was to turbo it myself. I would but nothing bigger then a 13G or T-25. Just because I wouldn't be looking for big power.. just a small "push/bump" in power.

The 2.4 is not stroked and a dohc head basically bolts right up. The rods are the same as the turbos, only the pistons are weaker due to the ring lands(you can keep them if your a damn good tuner). It's basically swapping parts over from a turbo car.

For the op, I found all the info to do the timing belt online not to mention all the info to turbo the car as well. Nearly all my parts on my car are for a turbo so you can't really say there is no love for our cars.

Also I don't think 275 is right. I think that's to replace the water pump and the accessory belts. I could be wrong but if that shop is charging 275 for a water pump and timing/balance shaft belt they are losing money

On a side note, DO NOT use an evo 4-9 cylinder head on your dsm 4g64 block. IT WILL NOT WORK with out a lot of modification. Use a dsm 4g63 dohc cylinder head. The intake and exhaust are 180* opposite of on a dsm.

My advice is to go with a dohc, and stronger rods and pistons with as high compression as you can go. Remember that also swapping a sohc to a dohc will increase your factory compression from 8.5:1 to 9.1:1 due to the different combustion chamber. Beyond that when trying to find engine rebuild parts like water pump and timing assembly. There is nothing wrong with gates, they are affordable and reliable.

With a good setup you are probably looking around 210whp

What are you planning to do with, are you looking for maintenance information or performance?

Where are our 2.4 guru techs at? This is a daily driver GS Spyder automatic. Im not trying to do anything crazy with an auto daily driver...its bad enough i can't even find the correct spark plugs to put in this thing as everything i read up on is for the 2.0L turbos...parts are a pain to locate for these engines too...everything is "special ordered" or have to wait 2 days to get it in...2.0 liter parts are a dime a dozen...

Oh and yeah Chrispy, id be nice if we can get a little bit more information for our vehicles eh? Im sure im not the only one thinking/searching for this type of information too. A 420a engine in a 2g sits opposite of a 4g63 or 4g64 engine. A 3g 64 engine sits on the passenger side same as a 420a, so yes in a way I am doing something completely different by swapping motors. It's by no means easy. I only stated it because although the different generation of 64 engines may sit differently they are still relatively the same.

I have found the best way for myself to find parts for my engine, has been online only. Lots of looking around for things and then ordering what I need. I wish I had part numbers in front of me for you but I don't. Sadly the fact is that most 63 parts are easier to come by than 64. Online is your friend.

The FSM info on the 4G64 starts on page 269 of this pdf:

That should give you everything you need as far as specs and procedures.

The 4G64 is the same basic casting as the 4G63 and many of the bottom end parts are the same. Notable parts differences are: crankshaft, cylinder bore size, lack of piston oil squirters, headgasket, rings and pistons. The pre-2000 spyder 2.4 blocks are actually pretty highly sought after because they are so compatible with the DSM 4G63.

The DSM aftermarket and this site's main focus are both on increased performance. The DOHC head and a turbo system offers much more of it. When you run into a piece you need and can't find, check out the freelancers (part-out specialists) who recycle parts for us.

Thanks for the link Delta. Im sure that'll help out alot of 2.4 liter non turbo guys in the future! I am new to DSM and never liked them honestly until i got this GS Spyder for free from my sister. It runs nice so i thought i'd fix it up. The car has been a nightmare honestly soo far. It sat for 2 years in our garage with a broken window. Long story short, for a free car, i've spent most of my time researching for parts and ordering things to find out its for the 2.0 turbos or 2.0 non turbo and won't apply to this engine I know what this forum is for. That's why im posting this topic for future tuners or 2.4L non-turbo guys. Appreciate all the help soo far! Lets keep this topic going for more information! Thanks!

i turbo'ed my spyder, making 232whp on 8psi with a 16g and just a safe tune (10.8-11.5 WOT) a stock GST only makes ~185whp on 12psi with a t25, i'm raising the boost to 15psi to see if i can hit 300whp. yes i have stock internals and ARPs, but i just rebuilt the motor with new rings, bearings, and timing belt. people have run 20psi on the stock longblock (stock internals, stock headbolts, etc). i have a DOHC 4g63 head sitting on my shelf waiting i need lower comp pistons and an intake mani before i can throw it on. no love for the spyder? lots of people use the bottom end for roadrace cars, its actually widely used. plus i like the added torque and stupid fast spooling time. it was a big project, but totally worth it.

you know the factory comp ratio for the 4g64 is 9.5:1 right? why swap the head? i'm makin 232whp on 8psi with the SOHC, the SOHC flows plenty for what most people use it for. i have a 4g63 DOCH head sitting on my shelf waiting to go on later the compression ratio should go up to ~10.5:1

There's plenty of love for 4G64's. Someone down in Florida (I don't have names or links, can't remember when I saw this) is doing an AWD swap using the 4G64. What all that entails, I can't imagine. I already have bad enough luck with mine (still love it though). But you can definitely turbo it. And I'm sure with enough search time you could fine out how to do it.

turboing one is as simple as buying a turbo mani, turbo, intercooler, injectors, having your ecu flashed (if you have a 98/99, or swap to turbo 98/99 & TB and flash), oil feed/return for the turbo, some gauges, bov, and exhaust. and lots of trips to autozone. i tune myself with a 99 GSX ECU and ECUFlash. you dont need pistons/rods unless you want more than 275-300whp. quite easy, just time consuming.

I have a 99 Eclipse Spyder non turbo and I absolutely love it!! Yeah it's a little hard to find parts for even just interior parts but it has a good strong engine runs great! I haven't had the problems with the engine on this car like I have had on the 420a's and I've had 3 of those. I'm reading up on the Haynes manual on this car so I can work on my own it's cheaper that way.
