2.3 Holset build suggestions

I was helping my friend(ob1murry) with his new 93 TSI AWD. He initially bought the car as a weekend warrior project car, only to find out that the head gasket was blown, timing was off, 390cc injectors, as well as a MISSING HEAD STUD! . Since we were going to have to pull it anyway we decided to drop it off at a shop to just go big.

So far parts purchased:
100mm crank(mitsu)
eagle H beam rods
Ross 9.0:1 stroker pistons
Manley valve springs/retainers
HKS 264 cams
Magnus SMIM
FP Exhaust Manifold
PTE 680cc's
ECMLink v3
Innovate LC-1
3' GM Maf
Walbro 255lp
Holset hx35 8 blade in bep .55 housing
Punishment racing FMIC

Since we changed setup after purchasing parts we will be upgrading the valve springs to kiggly's, trying to source some fp3x's, 1200cc Injectors, twin disc, Larger Precision fmic core.

My question is what clutch/fuel pump would you guys run with this setup?
His ultimate goal is low 10's high 9's. Do you think that this would be obtainable with the current setup and parts looking to get. He would like to stick with mitsu hotside. We were contemplating selling the holset setup and trying out the new FP68HTA.

Any suggestions are greatly welcomed.

I dont know what kind of pump you would put in. Thats kind of a tough choice. You will ###### run low 11's with this setup.

Thanks, we've been told the bosch 044 in tank might be able to get us there. We were trying to do some research to see if another 255 inline would net the same results. Also he has a snow performance stage 2 methanol injection system.

I thought you 1g guys can fit 2(side by side) Walbo's in tank. If I was aiming for 9's I'd go with that setup.

Nice log, Did you happen to get that leak fixed? I would love to see a log after you put in some bigger injectors and boost over 25. I really like it though, seems we may be going in a good direction.

Thanks man, I know this turbo won't get us there, we're open to suggestions but I would also really like to know what the 8blade hx35 in the .55bep will max out at. I'll try to keep this posted as we progress. The builder is out until saturday then we'll be dropping off parts and check the progress. Hope to have everything installed and started breaking in/tuning within a month.

think bout running aeromotive fuel pump like i am for added flow.

The Aeromotive pump is not made for high boost. If this is on a 1g car, I would definitely go with a self-made twin in-tank Walbro setup as it's cheap and very effective.

Any good write ups on how to modify the hanger for a dual walbro setup?

I have a home made twin intank wally 255's and it is supporting my hx40 pro in the bep housing on e85 so you should have more than enough fuel with that set up. The 8-blade if I remember correctly does not flow nearly as much as a 7-blade hx35. If you can get that set up into the 10's alone would be a good goal. Sense your going to go with v3 I would recommend looking into speed density.

Alright, was just updating saying that we received the fp3x's in the mail the other day as well as the hx35 rebuild kit. Man those cams are awesome looking. Still waiting on the methanol kit. We're probably going to go with the 255 rewired for the break-in and initial tuning. We'll see how far that takes us. Did anyone have any recommendations on the injector size to run? We'd be staying with pump/100 for most of the driving.

you might as well buy 1450s something that has room for improvement. bosch 044 pump with the 255 will do just fine. you wont do 9s with hx35 and pump/meth

52 lb/min; depending on race weight and how you drive, that's enough airflow for a low 11 / high 10. Some have gone faster with less airflow, plenty have gone slower with more airflow.

Thanks, we've realized that after doing some more reading. We would love to be able to max it out and try to break into 10's.

Thanks justin, I guess those will be our realistic goals with this turbo then. It would be good to know that everything is build built to support 9's at some point soon and just have the holset as the bottleneck for now.

Im sure the hx35 will get you to 10 with a good tune on it!
I saw a 1g TSI with a b16g, and 650cc's, a fmic, and stock bottom end break 11 mark
i think a hx35 and 1200cc's with a damn good tune will have to issue hit 10s

A 7-blade with a T3 turbine housing, definitely...you may see this later in the year from TalonDave.

An 8-blade in the DSM bolt-on housing will be a struggle to reach 10's on most setups based on turbine flow....then again, Curt Brown's black 1G has run 10.33 on an off-the-shelf Evo III 16G so anything is possible.

Thanks justin, When I saw it for sale the picture was showing 7 blades and was told minimal shaft play, "might not need a rebuild". Unfortunately when I got it home and took it apart I see that someone just slapped a 7 blade wheel on an 8 blade blackplate and that it needed a rebuild. Anyway the guy on here didn't know this, at least I hope as he said he got it in a trade and never ran it. So I picked up an 8 blade wheel and a rebuild kit and just gonna see what it can do for now.

Oh and the kiggly's are in the mail and picking up some 1250 injectors this week for a good price.

Well, just thought i'd throw in a little update. The builder took the block out only to find the bearings/crank mangled from the prior owner trying to build it. Well he found a 6bolt o-ringed, machines & bored .20 over. So next week the block gets the eagle crank/manley rods/and ross pistons. Switched it up a little with the new unexpected fun. Also ordering 1600's and an easytune box.
