Hey,

So I bought a 91 Talon TSI this week and ive noticed if im almost coming to a complete stop but still rolling and i try to put it in 1st gear it will grind. Also reverse is sticky and takes a couple times before i can get it in the gear.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

Check your transmission oil level, make sure bearings are lubricated.

On my car i noticed when i let off the gas it sounded wierd. When i put the clutch in the noise went away. 4th gear grinded hard and reverse was hard to get into. This was because the bearings in my tranny were going, oil was leaking and bearings weren't getting lubed. Ending up needing a new tranny. Not fun :ohdamn:

I'd start with adjusting the rod under the dash that connects the pedal to the master cylender first. Then try re-bleeding your clutch lines. If that doesn't work then you may need to shim your shift fork.

I had a similar problem in my 01 Jetta 1.8 T. The shifter cable was a little off.. After some adjusting, went away.

Also in my 1g, the cable moved a bit (IDK how) but after adjustment went it pretty smooth

Im really new to DSM scene and thanks for all the replies but yeah the shifter is a little loose when its in first or and gear it can move left to right slightly.

Please let me know if changing the tranny fluid helps

Thanks

Changing the trans fluid is not going to fix a mechanical issue like worn clutch or synchros. It may make shifting a little smoother while driving, but there's obviously something wrong if you can't get the car into gear unless you've come to a complete stop.

Take a look at yourshift linkage. It may be loose at the bracket that attaches to the tranny. That was a problem with mine when I first got the car.

Maladjusted linkages would have more effect on gears that were co-located, rather than across the neutral gate. For example, when I did my AT to MT conversion 2nd and reverse were hard to shift into. Adjusting the cable solved that problem. Adjusting the cables for 2 gears that are on opposite corners would be counter-productive, in my opinion. If the clutch is or has been dragging for any significant amount of time then it is possible that the syncros may be shot as well.

In this case, it appears that the OP's transmission is attempting to block the shifts between 1st and R gears. Due to the nature of these gears being shifted into frequently while the car is at a lower speed, I would suspect that the clutch dragging would have a higher incidence of affecting the quality of shift. Once proper clutch action is verified, then I would move on to other areas.

Edit: the link posted is misleading, it in fact does go to the Transmission Lockout page

As far as the shifter itself being loose, you can buy metal bushings off a vendor here for like 15 bucks. They also have whats called the Symborski shift kit, which is metal bushings to replace the worn out rubber ones right underneath the shifter itself.
