I have a 92 TSi and the power locks aren't acting as they should. When I lock one door, the relay clicks the other locks. When I unlock a door, the relay does NOT click and the other door does not unlock. From what I understand, this behavior is not normal. I've got the relay sitting right here... part number MB543647. From what I understand, this is the only relay that controls the power locks. The doors lock together, but do not unlock together. Is it possible there is a problem with the relay causing my problem?

Do this,

Driver side door. Hit lock, then unlock. Does it lock just one door? or both?

Then go to the passenger door, hit Lock, then unlock. Does it lock just one door? or both?

If it unlocks the door it's on, but not the other, I'd guess the relay. if it doesn't unlock either one, I'd guess it's the switch. If you can pull the switchs and relay and test them, I'd guess a wire some where is shorting out. If the headlights come on, it's probably buggered. (in case you can't tell, that's a bit of absurdity for humor)

Hope that helps.

The "unlock switch" unlocks the respective door it's attached to no problem (on each side), but flipping the switch does not unlock the door on the opposite side of the car. So it will unlock one side at a time (either side), but not both.

Relay. Hurry up and get a replacement before it decides to get worse and lock one of your doors up nice and tight. I bent the key on my brother's car to finally get the driver door open so I wouldn't have to climb through the hatch anymore. The passenger side still won't unlock from the inside, because I haven't ripped that relay out yet (hard to get to when the inside of the car is like a swamp and it's cold outside).

My locks are possessed. They work fine, except when I try to lock the car by flipping the inside passenger lock. It will almost always unlock itself within a second. Maybe that's a safety feature I wasn't aware of? :hmm:

I don't have another relay (this one is different from all of the other ones) but I'm going to try to get a couple from Pull a Part to try out in a couple of hours when they open.

I got lock problems as well. When I unlock my door it locks itself automatically right after and vice versa. I'll change the relay and see what happens.

Whoop, back up. Just remembered something. I checked that relay right before I got the door open (my brother's car, not mine. Mine is still possessed!). It was not the problem. The passenger door lock motor is frozen up, or otherwise rendered stuck by the solenoid located somewhere under the dash near the passenger's feet. It could still be your relay, but this is something else to keep your eyes open for if you're going to a Pull-a-Part place. It never hurts to have a spare... everything... for our cars. LOL

This morning I checked 3 1G's at the local Pull a Part for a relay. On the first one I felt where it should be and it was not there, and then I find it laying on the floor board? I grabbed it, but I've got a bad feeling about it. The second car didn't have one, and the third was a 90 that was different and didn't have one, at least not in the same spot. In summary, I bought one relay for $2 that I don't have much hope in, but it's something to try.

Update: Resolved. New relay did the trick. :D
