Can somebody please tell me the how the power locks should normally operate in a '90 Laser RS Turbo?

In my car when I lock or unlock the drivers door, the passenger door will do the same automatically. If I lock or unlock the passenger door, the drivers door's state doesn't change.

I'm trying to setup a simple keyless entry system, and when I manually trigger the power lock relays, I can get the passenger door to work fine, but the drivers door never changes. I'm just trying to figure out if this is expected behavior, and I need to get an after-market actuator for the drivers door, or if I've got a problem in the power lock system I need to figure out.

Thanks!

Both of my 1g's did that. My 1993 eclipse gs did it and so did my 1990 gs-t. I think its normal to do that as like a drivers controll thing.

ok, thanks for the sanity check regarding normal power lock function.

Can anybody give me any tips as far as controlling them via the relays? I've seen a number of 1g alarm/keyless entry threads between here and another DSM forum, and nobody that I've seen (except those w/o power locks to begin with) have needed to install actuators in the drivers door.

How do I go about troubleshooting this? I took the door skin off, and i see what I assume is the drivers actuator (around the latch area, mounted to the inside panel of the door), but its wires are difficult to get to, and even if I could get to them, I'm not sure how to test it. I'll try to post pictures tonight of what I see in the door, but my phone isn't playing nicely at the moment.

Mines slightly different. If I unlock the driver door with key, both doors unlock. If I unlock either door from inside, both doors unlock. These i know. Not sure what happens when I unlock passenger door from key,, but I am pretty sure both unlock.

I was going do the same thing,, buy and aftermarket key-less entry thing. My car also has a "security" light that comes on when I lock up.

You have the door master unlock feature. I know I didnt say it right but you get the point LOL. The feature you have on your car unlocks all the doors with the drivers key. I dont know if my cars ever had that because I never had the origional keys. I had to buy a new lock for the ignition causing me to not be able to lock my doors LOL. But I do know my friends 1992 dont have the unlock feature yours does and his passanger door switch only unlocks the passanger side but the drivers door switch unlocks all of them.

This is alot and maybe all of the info you need for your setup your looking at. I hope this helps you out. I have been a member of the12volt for a long time and I trust and know every detail they have there is legit and trust worthy.

Thanks for the help, I had actually used the link you pointed me to when I was initially researching which wires to use for the lock/unlock triggers. Not that I didn't trust the vfaq site, but a second opinion never hurts :thumb:

I think I've narrowed it down to the drivers side actuator itself. I seem to be getting the right readings on it's plug when I trigger the lock/unlock relays, but the actuator itself doesn't make any noise whatsoever.

If I'm looking at CAPS right, I think I need to track down a new door latch/actuator assembly. I'll update this thread once I find and install one.

Just tried this morning,, Unlock passenger from key, and both doors unlock. So, on my 90 tsi awd, both doors unlock all the time from either side, and from inside or outside.

Sure enough, it was a bad actuator! I picked up a "new" one from a GSX that DSMnoobsause was parting out, spent 5 minutes installing it, and the door locks work as expected, and my keyless entry install is done! :hellyeah:
