I currently running a Complete 6 Bolt Engine. Car was randomly having Cylinder 3 Misfire. So I figure I replace the Coil Packs. Currently its a 1g. Can I run a 2g Coil Pack or do i need to stick with a 1g Coil Pack?

First we need to know what year is your DSM is.
If you are running a 6 bolt in a 2g (95-99) you will never completely get rid of the random misfire codes until you get ecmlink or install the kiggly 6 bolt crank trigger kit.

But to answer your question, yes you can run either set of coil packs. I have personally done it without issues.

My car is a '97.

So I should uncheck the Cylinder Misfire under DTC Checks... I just wanted to make sure there is nothing actually wrong with the car... If I clear the DTCs reported and turn off and back on the car. It runs fine again...

But yea, I purchased new 2g CoilPack and tried to swap them into the 1g CoilPack bracket only to realize they are different. 1g CoilPacks are actually more expensive!

Its been a while since Ive been working on my DSM... Car has been sitting for 15 plus years... LOL

Thanks again!

What differences did you find? I was under the impression that the actual coils would swap between the brackets.

The Coils are different. They don't sit in the brackets the same. Maybe 180 in the 1g Bracket, but then it would be pointing into the manifold... Anyways I ended up hacking up the 1g bracket to make the 2g Coils fit the bracket.
Car seems to run better with the new coils. But now instead of Cylinder 3 Misfire, I get Random Misfire, so I guess thats better... I unchecked the Cyl Misfire DTC in Link. Hope that solves that.

I’m running 1G intake, so 1G coils are a good matchup, and you then run the 1G Plug wire lengths. The tricky part is a spot to bolt down the resistor pack.

Are 1G coils available still?

What’s surprising about a 1G part costing more? I find that usually the case….
I have the 90, which for some reason has a different coil (and power transistor?) than later models. Not really sure the differences, since I have only hoarded 90 coils. It would be cool to know if I could actually use other coils (and pt, if they are different).

Yes, you can order them aftermarket thru Autozone, Advanced Auto... 2G Coils are about $50 each. Orielly near me had 2 in stock. Life time warranty. If you want 1g then its $150 each so $300 total...

For that much I would go COP....

When I had my 90, I pretty much converted everything over to '91+ I believe there were write ups on how to convert the Power Transistor wiring harness to the newer plugs. Else you can always just swap out the engine harness...
