What are the options these days for 1g knock sensors? I found an old thread suggesting Mazda sensors, colt sensors, and galant, but seems like they’re all out of stock. I’m scared to order after market. Any ideas on this??

I bought one of these earlier this year just to have, I have not used it though.

It was from a link IIRC from a thread here.

As stated. Miata sensor and swap/wire the DSM connector on. Been the only choice for a few years now.

Marty has put a link or two up the last year or so about them. Maybe he’ll re-chime in. I bought a couple but can’t remember which ones at the moment, would need to get on the pc and pull up parts list.

The Mazda sensor is on back order as far as i can tell. Only a couple online dealerships have them in stock for roughly 200$ that’s OEM. Unless there is another sensor people are using.
It is not that important of a sensor to have a factory sensor. Rock Auto has multiple options in stock.

If you want to try a 1999-2005 Miata sensor, I'd get either the Standard Motor Products KS144 or the WVE 5S2260, or maybe the Beck/Arnley or the Walker Products sensor, from Rock Auto like here for 2002 Miata:
2002 MX-5 knock sensor

Probably I'd get the Standard Motor Products KS144.
I haven't tried any of these.

That Rock Auto page used to show the NTK ID0170 which seems to be no longer available.
Here's the actual NGK/NTK page for the ID0170 which currently says "On national back order with no ETA"
NTK 72845 ID0170 Knock Sensor
There's a Fitment list near the bottom of the page, and a Spec that says wire harness length is 16.5 inches.

I ended up getting an OEM Mazda one from Mazda. I got it at cost since i work at a Honda dealer, and they’re our sister store. Now i just need to find a 1g knock sensor plug so i can swap it. Anyone have a dead knock sensor??

The one attached to your current sensor seems like a good candidate

Thank you! How do i know which side is ground though?
The exposed/shielded wire. Ground and signal. Like I said earlier, it is such a simple sensor, an OE sensor is no better than any aftermarket option

I do not have a current knock sensor. Haha i got the car as a rolling shell. Piecing it together.

44 in stock.......
Oh wow… i did not know about this! I thought it had to be an OEM sensor to work properly and reliably for tuning purposes. I read one of your old posts about knock sensors and it seemed like the cars are picky about them.

I don’t see partsgeek as a real or valid website. Could be wrong, I just have never nor will I ever use them for anything.

However, for the third time, a knock sensor is a very basic component. At least on a first and second gen DSM. OEM is not the only answer in 2024 like it was in 1998.

You can also modify your harness to accept the Miata knock sensor in anyway you see fit. Miata connector adapted to stock harness, male and female spade connectors, hard wiring it. You are only limited by your imagination.

Again, it is only two wires.

I know some of us have ordered from AliExpress lately (Chino Store MD141510's) and I was one as a guinea pig. Reasonable enough, but I see that the plug is not EXACTLY able to plug into our harness without a 5 second modification, but to drag it out, I said it takes 5 minutes. Clip the alignment rails on the supplied connector and be done, viola.
Thanks for watching.

I followed up by going out to a shell 1g and testing the plug for fit and polarity correctness. It is correct and the retaining clip works also.
After reading some of the back story, I want to make it clear that I also tested all 3 of my sensors in my own block and they thread in just fine, so let's get that part clear for sure. No issues with the threads.

Yes sir, that is correct. White is paired with red on my stock sensor.

I used this sensor, just died on me and had random phantom knock like crazy and finally gave out. Nothing but problems with that sensor. I’m going to be trying a Mazda one.

I never even tried it. I bought a Mazda oem sensor too. Still haven’t started the car. Lol
