Hello I have a friend that just picked up a 1g Plymouth Laser fwd with the NA 4g63.It was an older lady who bought it new and drove it here and there. Its sat for the last 15 years in her garage. He ended up buying it from her and the sending unit and fuel hanger are pretty far gone and he can't find any replacements. Can he use a fuel hanger and sending unit from any 1g fwd eclipse or talon weather NA or turbo?I'm pretty sure the sending units are the same from 90-94 for the 1g but not sure on the fuel hanger.Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Here's pics of the old crusty ones taken out for reference.

Sending units are, fuel pump hangers are not.

The hangers, there’s a couple different varieties to match different tanks. If your tank has the hole in the bottom to bolt in / secure the hanger assembly, then that’s the style of hanger you need. If the tank doesn’t have that hole, then there’s need to be concerned with the flange as there’s two different patterns for the gasket. The one that uses part number MB926625 - better hope the gasket is still in good shape as that part number is obsolete. The alternative is to modify the flange to accept the available gasket, MB400578, or try your luck modifying the gasket to fit and seal with the flange.

I provide this to show different part numbers for different hangers, not necessarily to show what’s different between them.

As examples, here are three different variations of 1G FWD hangers, from left to right: turbo, late model non-turbo, early model non-turbo.

The first and last are more easily interchangeable; they both are secured through the bottom of the tank. The difference is in the size of pump each can hold. The middle one is not secured through the bottom of the tank.

The middle one also has a different pattern for the nubs on the gasket around the flange, as mentioned previously. Here you can see that difference on the flanges.

Here are the three gaskets that were available for the flange of the 1G hangers. The bottom one is MB926625 and the location of the nubs match the pattern for the left hanger in the picture immediately above. The middle one is the AWD version and is not compatible with the FWD hanger.

A lot of the cars I buy have been sitting for a long time and the fuel hangers look like what you have there. Most of the crusty stuff on there is probably varnished fuel and not rust. Usually the hangers clean up pretty nicely. Alcohol works good or get a bucket and fill it with e85 and let the whole thing soak. (Except the rubber gasket)

I have had issues with the obsolete gaskets not wanting to seal and my solution was to get allen head screws and use them instead of the factory phillips screws. You can get better torque and shouldn't have any more leaks. I know over torquing a gasket is not the proper way to get it to seal but they are still holding multiple years later.

Thanks I appreciate the pictures and showing me the differences as i couldnt find any pictures. He has a 90 laser so his should be the one on the far right of your picture of the 3 lined up, but his looks more like the far left 1st turbo one.Which seems odd to me given that that the car only has 17,000 or 27,000 original miles and hasn't been drove in 15 years.I wouldnt think it had to be changed out that early in life.Do you have anymore pictures of the far left and right ones in comparison? Here's the pictures of his I have.

That hanger still has paint on the outside OMG! It looks like it will clean up very nicely per 97egl‘s post. I also had issues with gasket mismatch and had to remove the little nubs (I got the MB400578 from STM). I was worried about this affecting the seal, but, I replaced the stock screws (little bolts see pic M5x12 for 91+), with stainless steel ones with lock washers. I also made sure the metal faces of the tank and the sending unit were clean and corrosion free. Zero leaks with a full tank.

+1 on trying to clean up the hanger assembly. I also thought mine was ruined when I first removed, but some working with a mild brass wire wheel and a quick wipe down made it look nice again. You can see it still had most of the zinc plating remaining.

This is from a 92 non turbo, you can spot those differences

So it makes sense that the hanger you have looks like the turbo version. The part numbers show all 1990 and most 1991 FWD models got the same pump and hanger. Even the 1.8L models appear to have received the same pump and hanger for the same period.

Then they get a bit of variety. The 5-speed turbo versions through 1994 used the same pump and hanger (MD400420), but the automatic turbo models received a different version (MB845502) - what exactly is different I could not say.

After the last third of March in the 1991 model year, the non-turbo versions used MB658436 for the remainder of the model year and then MB923663 thereafter through 1994.

The obsolete gasket MB926625 shows being used on all non-turbo versions from 1992-1994. For S&G’s, here’s one of those later year non-turbo hangers modified to accept the MB400578 gasket.
