i just purchased a 92 eclipse gs with a 2.0l non turbo.the car was running when i brought it witch was 2 days ago and now it turns on and runs for about 5in and then shuts off and wont turn back on till like an hour later and then it turns back off in 5 minutes..the car also blows white smoke and some kind of liquid is coming from exhaust(maybe water because it seems pretty thin)the car also has a idle problem goes up and down between 1k and 1500k rpm..theres also a red wire thats grounded to the car but doesnt connect to anything just hanging there.the wire is on the driver side by the ac fuse box.oh and theres also a clicking noise coming from the cam gears side of the engine but i only get that sometimes.please help guy i really dont anything about dsm engines and from what i heard there supposed to be really good if not one of the best engines

these are the problems that i know so far

crack exhaust manifold

leaking oil from bottom of engine(oil pan gasket?)

theres a sensor in the throttle body thats missing a bolt witch makes it loose

air filter could use a replacement

You did Say white smoke does your temp guage work? you mabey overheating the car due to a blown head gasket. But also you said their's a wire grounded to the body of the car. how long is that wire? also does you RPM guage act funny jumping around or was it when you where driving it.

well i looked over the engine again and found that the coolent temp sensor isnt connected it and the wires are cut..could that be the problem why my car starts then turns off and wont go back on till awhile later

I hate to say it man but that sound's like headgasket. and If you are good mechanically it's not to hard the hard's part will be doing the timing bye yourself! When you take the head off (if it's the headgasket) you will need to check the block and head for warping and or cracks. The mitsu book will show you how to do all that stuff.

Could be cam possition sensor is flaking out. Can I ask if anyone was with you when you looked into buying this car? I have found that if you are not mechanically inclined, it is almost best to not own one of these, unless you have a good mechanic (my opinion, I'm on my third).

yea my friend is a master tech he works on commercial airplanes, buses, and cars he said it needed a oil pan gasket, manifold, shocks, and he thinks some type of sensor because the idling problem.when we looked at it the car wasnt running they said it just stopped and they changed fuel filter, alternator and some other parts and couldnt get it started.so i came with my friend and we jump started it and it started right up with no problem.they said they put a new battery so they never thought that was the problem but i checked it and the positive connection for it was loose so that may have been why it wouldnt start

sounds like blown head gasket ### thats what happened to my explorer it would not start then it would and it blew white smoke then didnt start again i blew the head gasket on it and maybe the idle is the filter make sure you have the computer part all the way plugged in and get a new air filter one time i left mine unpluged and it idled so bad

It's a blown head gasket. The white smoke shows it's a cooling leak. And, with the clicking I would think it's a broken valve too in the 4th cynlinder. And check the head from been cracked and you loosing compression.

Prices can vary alot from state to state and depending on the quality of gasket you choose but the gasket is generally an inexpensive part it's the installation that keeps most people putting it off, I would say to get a timing belt, head gasekt, new intake and exaust manifold gasket as well as valve cover gasket and put it back together the right way so everything on the top end seals nicely and you can run worry free for a while

First make sure the head gasket is blown :http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-engine-fuel/336535-do-you-have-blown-head-gasket.html

ok sure will..theres a guy i called he a mobile mechanic asce certified and he said he gonna check out the valves, gaskets, head basically everything in there and change all the gaskets along with timing belt and tensioner.he said that he would do the job and parts all i would have to pay is the machine shop to do the resurfacing and valve adjustment sometthing like that and that would only run me 150-200.im giving him a xbox 360 bundle for his son thats why im getting a good deal or atleast i think it a good deal and he also gonna check for anything else that may be wrng

If that guy knows what he's doing thats a great deal those parts cost about the same as a 360 any day. I would do that man.

well looks like this guy backed down but i got a hold on another guy 14yrs certified and he owns hisown shop.he said he would do a complete engine rebuild for me and all i gotta do is buy all the parts and take the block and head to machine shop and pay for that to get done so m looking at total just $700 and i just barter some electronic stuff and that covered my labor charged..basically xbox bundle and 22in lcd monitor..sounds good right?

hey instead of doing that u can do a compression test just to double check it is head gasket. if you get really low numbers under 100 and the cylinders r uneven then yeah u got bad head gasket. honestly its not a hard job though ive done 3 for my 2 dsms and my friends dsm LOL. just make sure the car at TDC BEFORE you lift the head. then pull the exhaust to make it easier to lift head and unbolt the head and lift it with the intake (thats what i do but u may wanna get a buddy cus its heavy!) then replace and markl the timing marks again and clamp telt on the cam gears first then work way down to tensioner and crank pully etc and youll also need a tensioner tool to do a timing job or maybe a paper clip will work. hope that helps. all the stuff i left out like vac lines and plugs just label for urself to make it easier to hook up in right order
