I have read a lot of "controversy" regarding bov venting to the atmosphere. I want to vent mine, for my own reasons, but I don't want to change from the 1g. Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated, and no flaming, please.

theres a few ways. best way is to "crush" it.

Run a gm maft in blowthrough and put a filter on the bov.

No it's not really worth it. I ended up going back to drawthrough and recirc'ing.

Pull the recirculation hose and then put it back on when you realize that venting without a GM MAFT is dumb.:thumb:
..or VPC or standalone.

First of all the tech article section is not for questions and putting your questions here will actually get you some answers.

As far as this particular question I suggest you do more research before posting

I was just wondering if i can vent my blow off valve to the atmosphere, i just dont know with it not re-circulating would it send any weird signals to the ecu.

How many of you cringed when you saw the title. Well, I'm not going to start another one of those threads, but I would like to know if you are using a MAFT or VPC that allows you to vent to atmosphere, isn't there still the potential to harm your vehicle. My understanding is that these two gadgets merely fools the ECU.

What are your thoughts on this?

I've heard mixed things about the MAFT but I've never heard of anyone having trouble with the VPC vented.

They dont fool anything. The VPC actually changes the car from a MAF sytem to a speed density system. Since the VPC uses different ways to messure air, not a MAF, then it doesnt care if you vent or not. The MAFT will place the MAF after the BOV. The problem with the stock system is that air is metered first, then if you blow off it lets mettered air out causing a rich condition. If the MAF is after the BOV all air that is blow out has not been mettered so it doesn know any better. If you put a MAFT in the stock location you will have the same venting problems.

Is it better to vent the BOV to the atmosphere or not? For example...the Greddy Type S. A friend of mine has it installed on his evo8 and his isnt vented. Another friend of mine has the Greddy type S and he vented it. I know its louder if its vented, but performance wise is it a big diff?

You will run rich in between shifts in most cases. Some people run vented without problems, and some cars practically stall between shifts (KILLING performance). So, basically, you could try it and find out, or just play it safe and recirculate (which I recommend, strongly).

P.S. I once started reading a thread somewhere where this guy was posting some random shit about increased turbo response when venting to the atmosphere, but I blew it off and didn't read the whole thing. *shrug*

P.S.S. You can also drop some extra cash to get some aftermarket sensors reading your airflow AFTER your BOV (I think you replace your MAF entirely, but I don't have any experience/knowledge in this area), in which case venting would be nearly identical to recirculating.

P.S.S.S. Still, just don't do it. :p

EDIT: I just read you have a non-turbo..?

Thread closed, many topics on venting already.

Consensus is as follows.

Do not vent unless you removed the MAF and gone with some other method of metering air a.k.a GM MAF translator.

"The HKS EIDS has been developed to buffer dramatic airflow meter signal fluctuations. By buffering these fluctuations the EIDS prevents engine stalling or stumbling associated with sudden imbalances in air/fuel ratio of airflow meter-equipped vehicles that utilize atmosphere venting blow-off valves."

Would that work? DSMs' issues with venting isn't due to airflow fluctuations, they're due to having read and adjusted for airflow that venting is discarding. Venting a DSM doesn't disrupt flow through the MAF.

Ok heres my question. I know a lot of you have vented your BOv no problem, others will bog during shifts and run rich. I want to try to see if my car will run with no problem. I will be getting my Air/Fuel gauge soon, after its hooked up, if i cap off my rec. tube and vent, won't my gauge tell me if im running rich or not. I know this is a newb question, but im just making sure.

Thnx

Well considering most cars run rich during WOT, you will most likely not notice any differance in the air/fuel gauge. They really are a waste of money unless you have a wideband sensor. It's better to use a logger to check your air/fuel.

Also, as for venting, don't! There is simply no reason whatsoever in the performance world to vent your BOV. The only reason whatsoever to do so is for the sound or because you have pipes that don't have a rec port. Either way, if you really want to vent, get a blow-threw setup and MAFT.

Bottom-line, if you vent your BOV without compesating for the air count, be prepared for engine problems somewhere down the line regardless of how "right" your car "seems" to be running. You can NOT vent 12-20psi of pressurized air and expect the engine not to care!

 but if i get a gmmaft setup(over $200) i gotta tune my fuel so i gotta get a SAFC, then i might as well upgrade my fuels system, bigger inj, rewire fuel pump, bigger fuel pump..by that timeim ready for a new turbo s ill have to get a 16G.

Its just too much money.
