I have read a lot of "controversy" regarding bov venting to the atmosphere. I want to vent mine, for my own reasons, but I don't want to change from the 1g. Is this possible? Any help would be appreciated, and no flaming, please.

It does spudder at low boost (5psi) but if you take it to atleast 10, you'll have that nice pssshhhht sound if set correctly.

;) :talon:

with the GReddy adjustable screw turned all the way in, you are hurting your turbo, it may sound cool, but it is just bad. flutter is the intake

sorry to keep this current but i really dont understand this venting is bad, because the bov recirculates after the maf on a 2nd gen and the air is not metered that i know of unless there is a pressure sensor after the turbo and before the throttle plate, and with a bov aftermarket like say a hks bov shouldn,t alow vaacum like said above should it? the only thing that makes sense to me is to keep constant pressure in the ic tubes, but it still dont make sense then because thats the whole purpose of the bov is to releive pressure from the throttle plate but it should only releive enough to close the bov. so on this im lost and hopefully someone can put it in a way that ill understand it? thanks

yes it is metered. the air that is being released from your BOV came from where? what intake point did it come from? the intake from your air filter which leads to your MAF. when mass or "air" enters your MAF it is metered and then sends a signal to your ECU. then your ECU sets a calculated load for your INJECTORS based on your MAF's meter of registered AIR flow and thats how it calculates AIR/FUEL RATIO. now if your BOV is vented to the Atmosphere you will run rich because there is less air or MASS in the system there for your ecu and fuel injectors are now fooled in to thinking there is going to be enough air/mass to mix with fuel being dumped in. RUNNING RICH MEANS TOO MUCH FUEL . why is this bad? running too rich can bog a cars performance, fuel economy, and daily driving(not all at once). now this is more to dsm than others but very noticable. ask any wiseman or moderator in this website. hope that helps. we need to move this to a newbie area.

Hmmm... that funnny. I see the translator going for $200+ and the GM Maf going for $60+

I'd rather go with the hess racing unit or HKS. Also how do you know that Hess racing unit or HKS unit will not work or vent properly?

I thought that almost all aftermarket bov's didn't leak at idle. Even if they where vented. Their for their would be no need for a idle smoother...

And if all it does is keep the idle smooth, how does it compensate for the extra fuel still being dumped into the motor by the ECU.

It will idle smooth till the first time you blow off and then since you lose the unmetered air it goes rich when its trying to idle causing irratic idels. but it will smooth back out after i while. The 1g bov does leak at idle tho

i want to vent but dont wanna spend 260-280, i dont wanna buy that gm maf and the gm maf-t. anyone kno bout the hks eids, hess racing unit, tell me some experiences with it so i dont buy something that doesnt work, thx alot

First things first. Try some better grammer and puncuation next time. On other forums, you wouldn't last long.

Anyways, The HKS thing I just heard about the other night. From what I understand, It offers no potential like a gm maft. Also, its almost half the price. It just makes alot more sense to pay an extra hundered dollars and get something that does more than allow you to vent.

well has anyone tried those 2 things i asked bout???? the hess racing one is like 90 bucks

If someone had there would be a thread about it. Have you searched or done any research at all on your own?

but what does the extra fuel being dumped in do?? i dont understand, sorry i dont kno alot bout these cars

you answered your own question. the ecu doesnt add extra fuel because the eids intercepts the mas signal before it reaches the ecu & tells the ecu everything is fine.

The best that thing can do is guess how much air is being lost when you vent as it has no real way of measuring it, it can only tell things like rpm, throttle position and airflow. The amount of air that is actually vented between shifts depends on ALOT more than that. If you want to trust your engine to what a universal product like that can "guess" go ahead and get it, you will get universal guesstimate results. If you want your car to run good and you absolutly positivly need to vent for the "look at me i spent a bunch of money on a loud bov instead of some go fast mods" then get a gm maft, your car will thank you.

IT doesn't matter how much air is lost or vented. the eids doesn't care or want to care. it's not intended to guess or give an accurate amount lost.

it's only purpose is to prevent the ecu from adding extra fuel.

which gives you a nice smooth idle.

the gm mafts are so so, i would spend a few dollars more to get rid of the karman vortex pnenomenan & go with a hks vpc.

Ive been interested in the Hess product for a while as the whole lower half of my MAF is cut out to eliminate fuel cut. Its hack so much that I can vent without it stall its just the idle is extremely rough.

So if it doesnt know how much air is lost during venting then i'm assuming it doesn't even adjust the airflow signal when it vents and it just overrides the stock mas signal at idle with a simulated signal so it idles smooth. Correct?

If this is the case its still worthless on a dsm as its still going to run rich between shifts which is the main problem with venting, rich = poor gas mileage, poor performance, and will eventually wash the oil down the cylinder walls and lets gas into your oil.

I've got an idea..spend about $20 on some hose and clamps..and return the BOV to the intake....better for your wallet..and better for your car.

it sounds like itd work.... but im still gonna stick with my gmaf, with a gmaf you can completely get rid of the stock pos.... just anr airfilter an intake then lot better flow id think....

ryan

If by does it allow you mean does it allow you to do so "correctly" then the answer is no. The reason being that it is still using the stock MAS and therefore would still be dumping metered air.
