1998 GSX can't power up a Radar Detector via OBD2.

I’m trying to find out why my 1998 GSX’s OBD2 port can’t power up a Valentine One Radar detector.


I know that my OBD2 port have power because my OBD2-diagnostic tool can connect via Bluetooth-Smartphone to read Check Engine lights.

But for some reason, I can’t power my V1 at all. Does it just not have the juice for it?


This is the first car (of 3 I’ve owned in the past) that does not power up my radar detector.


Any help is appreciated.

Not sure why you want to connect it via obd but could be that output voltage is not enough for the radar. Check the radar specs on how much volts it needs and check the volts obd is putting out.

Why would you bother? There is a fuse box right there with plenty of 12v sources. But as above if you insist on using that harness check the pin you want to use for voltage. Assuming that pin is a voltage feed in the first place.

You guys might not be familar with the Valentine one Radar detector and its features.
It doesn't have to plug into a cigarette port and be hideously exposed.
It can be powered via obd2.
Like I said, i should check power requirement, but if eclipses don't supply enough power, it would be incredibly sad.
Let see, in my experiences, my valentine one has worked on a 1999 3000gt vr4, 1997 acura integra, 2000 Acura TL, 99 BMW M3, 2006 Mazda 3.
To say it doesn't work on a 98 eclipse GSX would suck dick and blow balls.

I should be cheap and grab me a cobra.

Hah you said blow balls. What features do they add to radar detectors these days? I haven't even seen one in years.

some have gps capability so that if you frequently visit the same area (like on your commute to work) and keep getting false signals in the same spot (maybe from automatic opening doors or motion sensors etc.) you can make it so the alarm doesnt go off for those things and it will remember it. Some of them will even let you know if theres a plane in the air nearby checking for speeders on the highway, not sure how that works...some will stay updated on where all the speed cameras are at and they'll alert you before you even get to where they can detect you.

Stealth mode??? I hated my interior lights on my spyders rear view mirror so I clipped them and hard wired in a Cobra Radar scanner

From what I understand it's just the selected power source for the adapter.

Valentine One is a top-of-the-line radar detector next to Redline, and Max. It has its own unique feature that no other RD has.
Its not your cheap RD.

Valentine one has something called Savvy which allowed them to hide the actual radar detector unit and use a separate (concealed and relocated) display so that other people dont feed off your RD when you're driving out of town. Plus, it's more stealthy around town.
Savvy powers plugs into your OBD2 port.
Savvy also allows you to set a certain speed limit (ie, 25MPH) where if you driving under that speed limit, it will not alert you of any police, etc.
Valentine one is the only RD company that has this due to patent claims.
