Ive been looking into getting a Radar detector but I honestly don't know too much about them. Do you guys know any good brand for a decent price?

I'm surprised this thread is still open.

I don't See how you could be going 20mph over as its always bumper to bumper in the city. I've drive. Through multiple times and I always hate it.

cobra 9500ci its a stealth jammer so it cannot be detected but jams there signal. Illegal if caught but cant be caught because its stealthy. I can get them for 700 but i think they are like 1200 or so

passport excuse me

There is not one out there proven to block cops radars. MN state patrol uses the button feature on their vehicles and catch people with radars. Don't you think police agencies know about the attempt to make jammers and counter them?

I personally wouldn't go with a jammer, mainly because i am 90% sure that jammers are illegal in all 50 states.

While I wouldn't ever try to use any "jammer" and as you said most don't even work anyway...

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this But, the "button feature" you use is called 'POP' right? unless your talking about Laser?(IE lidar) or other system I'm not familiar with? which I doubt... .

If your talking about Pop it's very inaccurate and only should be used to obtain an "estimate of speed". I believe in some states in order for a speeding ticket for to be held up the officer must turn on their regular radar to get a Accurate Reading after using it. While this might not be the case in all states it should be IMO...Also in regards to laser guns they shouldn't be used to target vehicles past 1,000 feet due to the gun's beam divergence of 36" at that distance since it might incorrectly target an adjacent vehicle.

I really hope that your jurisdiction isn't writing tickets or pulling people over based solely off any MPH unit with POP technology if that's what your using. IMHO, that would be a very immoral I wouldn't since it's been proven time and time again that this technology is flawed and even the manufacturer states not to use it for ticketing puposes... .

Also their is at least 20 radar detectors that will pick up POP radar, among other bands. and While theirs Radar detector-detecting technology that some police use to tell if drivers are using Radar their is also Radar detector-detecting-detecting technology that can turn of radar so it's all really a mute point.
Don't take me wrong I don't condone speeding on pubic roadways. but theirs plenty of safe drivers out there that get caught of guard by speed traps and not all Peace officers are of good standing moral aptitude, just like the rest of society...

Also as far as I, know Strictly speaking about private cars the only places that Radar detectors are Illegal that I know of is Virginia, Washington D.C and, Military bases. While you can be fined in Minnesota and California it not because the radar detector but because theirs prohibitions against affixing items to windshield that obstruct vision.

Although they ARE Illegal in all Commercial vehicles over 10000lbs under federal law.

It depends on the locality but,
detectors are generally legal in private cars under the Communications Act of 1934

How are you a safe driver if you get caught in a speed trap?

Do you have the appropriate information to backnup the claims you are stating about 36' of accuracy? Regardless, the equipment needs inspected and calibrated every 6 months unless it got bumped to a year now by DOT.

Dont be an idiot, don't speed. There is no need for a detector and asking for one implies that you are speeding which is unsafe.

Just like road construction signs say out here, "slow down, save a life".

The Escort Passport 8500 is a good affordable one. There's also the 9500ix, which has a couple more bells and whistles, for more money. If you want to go all out I would say find yourself a Valentine 1.

From people I've heard it from, if an officer finds it in your car then have right to destroy it as it's providing evidence of unlawful activity (speeding).

Why do you need a detector anyway? Being safe (you and others) is better than reckless driving.

That used to happen in states where they're illegal, but multiple lawsuits put a stop to it. Now they just take it temporarily and copy down the serial number, while they write you a ticket.

Regardless of whether or not it's illegal in your state, it's probably going to piss off a cop if they see one in your car when they pull you over, so stow it in the glove compartment, under the seat, or somewhere out of sight before they get to your window.

save up your money and get the best, (v1) ive had a cheapy 60 dollar cobra earlier, it worked but not like the v1, go to the website and check for yourself its valentine1.com i believe. if not google it, it will be your best purchase by far.

Assuming a detector is for speeding is just as silly as assuming a knife is for stabbing people.
I rarely speed and have a long commute about 45 miles each way. I find my radar detector makes me a better driver. When it beeps I always glance at my gauges to see what speed I'm going. It's a good reminder that way.
As for the topic at hand I have a Whistler, I'd say the biggest drawback is that it only detects from the front. But most of the time it's either an officer hiding on the side of the road or one coming at me from the other direction that it detects and for the price it works well enough. It's great for rural driving, not so hot in the city beeps at everything.
As far as mounting I came up with a good solution that works for me. I went to the store and bought little rubber feet for it. I put 7 of them on the bottom and set it right on the dash inline with my view. The little feet keep it from sliding around.

I agree with eclipsergst So far liquid you haven't given any helpful information just bashing anyone that wants a radar. If you don't ever reckless drive at least up to the speed limit then you shouldn't be apart of the forum. Whats the purpose of being on a site that helps upgrade their vehicle to go faster. Does anyone else have a radar detector that has worked for them? I am also in the market for one before my car is insured again.

Something that's priced fair how much are the whistlers going for I would like to stay under $300 .If I can get one for $150 with similar results Id also prefer that LOL

Were on a tuner site. Why is there people calling others "idiot's" for speeding? Aren't we all trying to have a fast car? Hypocrite.

Fast car on the track, not on the steet, fool.

As you should know this site doesn't condone any type of illegal activities (speeding, street racing etc.), to keep it educative and a resourceful environment without rice, benchracing, immature conduct etc. Please think before you post.

Thank you TsiFromHell, that's exactly the point. Everything done is to be done speed wise safely at a track where if an accident were to happen there are on site personell ready to respond to anything that may happen.

If this is something that you feel the need to argue about then it seems you are unfamiliar of what the rules are form which you agreed to.

The only benefit to having a radar detector is to help prevent yourself from getting pulled over for speeding, nothing more. Why else would you need to know where potential traps are at?

@Jackson, I can see your "idea" of what's good about it, but you should always be aware of roughly you speed is and not need to be reminded of what it is.

There is a time and place for most things and speeding is for the track or emergency personell.

So your saying you have obeyed all traffic laws since you slipped out your mothers womb?

Anyway, I have a cobra radar detector that was given to me from my friend. He sold his Civic with a gsr swap. It works great & is a constant reminder to watch my speed. I have not been pulled over since I have owned it. I also only have one speeding ticket on my record. :hmm:

I'm not saying I have been perfect my whole life but I know well enough when I should and need to be safe. As stated already, the rules clearly state no talk of street racing or illegal activitys which this is implying as per it's use.

Oh did I say that? Where?

You're missing the point. What I do & how I drive etc. is of my own business and at my own risk... However I don't talk about it on this forum because I agreed not to, and respect the reason behind the rule. I also think the attitude behind people who talks about speeding etc. on this forum is quite lame. Keep it to yourself; talk about the radar, I don't care, just don't come around and call other people hypocrite when they're simply following the forums regulation. Thanks.

How are you a safe driver if you get caught in a speed trap?
Key work is Trap... .
Say your coming up to corner on a road you don't know that has clearly posted speed limit of 35 half-way around the corner you see another sign saying 25 but its to late to get to 29mph. an off to the right behind the hill that was blocking your view of the road (and extra speed limit sign)theirs an officer with his radar out? if you had a radar detector you may have picked up it before hand and may have been on the brakes before hand ? the way your talking a because someone has a radar detector they would be guilty just for that reason
Yet they could have been driving perfectly safe and don't a a safe opportunity to slow to that speed limit...
Do you have the appropriate information to backnup the claims you are stating about 36' of accuracy? Regardless, the equipment needs inspected and calibrated every 6 months unless it got bumped to a year now by DOT.
Actually I didn't say 36 feet I said 36 inches
" not ' But in any event it may have been a particular lidar system but I do know for a fact that the New Jersey Superior Court issued a landmark ruling. stating that laser guns may not target vehicles past 1,000 because of this.

In regards to inspection you could inspect the the equipment all day but if it's being use in away that it's not designed or in a way that is not apoprite, what good it it going to do?

he's some more reading for you
In regards to the POP technology in units sold by MPH

in the accompanying Operation and Service Manual, as follows:

"A note of caution: Information derived during the POP burst is non-evidential... Citations should not be issued based solely on information derived from the POP burst"

Don't be an idiot, don't speed. There is no need for a detector and asking for one implies that you are speeding which is unsafe.
People that make assumptions:nono:and lower them self to name calling...:|

I don't know if this was directed at me but it's hard to see how it wasn't as I said before I don't condone speeding on pubic roads yet neither do I condone police issuing ticket with the equipment in a manner as I stated above...
I'd have to say as said before it encourages better driving habits for those out their that don't speed yet have a fast car that could easily "get up to speed"or the limit.

ALSO just because it's your opinion that it "implies" something doesn't make it fact... .

Just throwing this out there but Have you ever drove in MT?

Specked areas are pre designated with determined speeds regardless of whiter its posted or not. This is what I learned in my drivers ed class 10 years ago or so. AFAIK, I though that when speeds were changing there was a warning before it happened?

I was hoping it was a typo by putting in inches rather than feet as 3 feet seems pretty short for laser detection faults.

No, I haven't driven anywhere west if Ohio. Just North and a state south.

If a radar detector is t meant for speeders then what is it for. Also you cannot classify all knives together as all are for different uses. A cleaver is for chopping, a stiletto for stabbing, And a scalpel is for medical surgeries.

@Jackson, I can see your "idea" of what's good about it, but you should always be aware of roughly you speed is and not need to be reminded of what it is.
You should, but nobody is perfect and let's face it the law doesn't understand "roughly." Having a radar detector can be a good tool to assist in awareness of your speed.

You also said yesterday "How are you a safe driver if you get caught in a speed trap?" - Speed trap by nature is about revenue not about safety which is why they recently took out all the photo radar on state roads here.
I also spent two weeks in Germany recently where they drive much much faster. Yet I didn't see a single accident. Here in AZ when they increased the speed limit to 75mph on highways a lot of people cried about how many more accidents there would be. Yet accidents and deaths have actually decreased. Also the people I see driving the fastest are our very own police. Point is just because someone is speeding doesn't mean they aren't safe.

^ This is exactly why I asked him if he had ever drove in MT...

Ever time I've crossed into MT, probably with in 20 min I got past while doing 85mph. By I Officer going in excess of 100mph no lights no emergency ...Yet neither of us were breaking any laws,(why someone may ask? I'll get to that)the officer may have been in a sense. But either way one time Depending on you vehicle there was NO speed limits .
It was what ever is Reasonable and Prudent. But, this was is so vague that it violated the due process clause of the Montana Constitution and was replaced with a main state speed limit of 75.

It use to read...
A person . . . shall drive the vehicle . . . at a rate of speed no greater than is reasonable and proper under the conditions existing at the point of operation . . . so as not to unduly or unreasonably endanger the life, limb, property, or other rights of a person entitled to the use of the street or highway.

This in a way, still applies. But in the sense that you must drive below the limit depending on the changing traffic conditions and adjust your speed as conditions vary.

If you take into consideration the condition of most their roads. It's no surprise that it use to be considered the "Montanabahn" and people use to travel from all over the world to drive their roads. Most of the shoulders are as wide if not larger then a full lane and even most of the winding roads(in most places) Are in perfect smooth shape not to unlike the real Autobahn.

Also Just throwing this out there but in Rhode Island, Texas, and Utah... . Exceeding the speed limit is a Prima Facie offense an you can argue in court that you were exceeding the speed limit but, should not be convicted because the speed was safe.
Their is also about 10 other states were the same thing applies as long as your not exceeding the states Main speed limit.

In regards to what I was saying about being passed I'm not sure on the limits anymore. But I know In WA MN and MT you are allowed to temporarily exceed the speed limit while passing a vehicle on two lane roads.

I was hoping it was a typo by putting in inches rather than feet as 3 feet seems pretty short for laser detection faults.

Typo? I made no typo you made an assumption I said 36" as in 3'
1' equals 12"

Either way you may not consider that far, But If you are being passed(on a three lane Interstate) by a Carolla thats going 82 and you going 76 and a Officer targets you with a radar Gun thats off buy 3' past 1000' an picks up their speed then YOU get pulled over base off what in any other event would be consider profiling because you are in a sport car. It would be safe to say your opinion would probably change.

All in All I wasn't asking or directing any of my Statements or Questions toward you. I'm not sure what you inherent need to refute any of this is . But I doubt that Boomdeeze will even see my first Questions now because all these kinda OT posts... .

this thread is def not on topic.

eclipsegst what kinda cobra do you have?

eclipsegst what kinda cobra do you have?

I wouldn't recommend any of Cobra's radar detectors or any others besides what I list below... .

If your gonna buy a Radar detector fork out the $$$ on any of these Escort Passports(9500i, 9500 ci, 8500 X50, 9500ix)Or A Valentine One

^These two brands are the best

Also a couple other that come to mind are Whistler(XRT-695SE, XTR-695Se, Pro 78SE) and Beltronics Pro RX65 and STi Driver

If you buy a Valentine One used make sure you get the newest version you can You can have any V1 upgraded but the newer the version the cheaper its going to be... .

actually, you guys who are throwing the "you shouldn't be speeding" around know radar detectors arent used for JUST cops right? a lot of them can actually tell you if an emergency vehicle (firetruck/ambulance) is in the area. so technically, it CAN make you a safer driver.

The best on the market, is the Laser Mask found here Laser Radar Jammer Detctor X - K - KA Laser Diode LED . It jams the radar/laser detector for about 20 seconds. It beeps, lights up on your dash or whereever you have the LED light mounted, you slow down to the speed limit, then the cops radar will eventually read your speed. But by the you already had plenty of time to slow down. It's on sale right now for $379 or something. And if you get a ticket while using Laser Mask, they pay for your ticket. More info and vids showing how it works are all on that site.
