I live in Virginia and here you cannot have a radar detector in your car among other things so my question is what radar can I get that is undectable by the police and can be used not on the dash? Maybe a 2-part system where one piece is in the front of the car and the monitor is in the car under the dash or something? Please give me some feedback. Thanks.

Most all radar dectors that i've ever seen have an option where it detects VG-2 which i think is what the cops use to detect radar detectors. So as soon as your radar detector dectects VG-2 signals it goes into invisable mode and turns itself off. They do make radars that have sensors in your grille and bumper but they are pretty pricey.

does mounting the radar dectector above the rear view mirror affect the performance rather then near the dash?

No, it will work equally poorly regardless of where you stick it. Up to a point.

In the olden days, there was some thought that you'd do better by picking up some scatter off the hood, but they also thought foil balls in the hubcaps would jam radar.

Don't try to rely on a detector. The instant-on stuff the cops are using has made most detectors very expensive trinkets.

I'll disagree with this. Auto-on detectors are newer and cost a lot of money, not all states have them. Its true that if you get shot by laser that the cop will have your speed even before your detector goes off, but its not that way with radar. My friend has one of the newer Whistler radars that picks up so much more than my older one. It helps point out where the cops are, especially in Jersey where they're using older detectors that mostly use X band radar. Detectors are definately not something to use as a complete crutch and rely on but a good one can save you from radar before its too late. As I said already, if you get shot by a laser you're done. If nothing else the detector lets you know if you were actually clocked it not, its helped me to find a cop's bluff if he pulls me over and it didnt get hit, I know he doesnt have an actual speed on me.

If you're one-on-one with an instant-on radar, you're toast. Many times, though, you'll probably have enough time because of the cop tagging cars in front of you that you can slow down. And just mount it so that it has a clear view of the road ahead.

Valentine 1 baby. :thumb:
Heck, they even got special laser/radar jammers now that actually do block out the signal. I forget who makes them though.

Escort Passport is the own :p

Anywaus, ACTIVE radar jammers are illegal, big time. Federal crime. FCC fines, all kinds of fun. Passive ones are federally ok, and ok in most states that allow radar detectors. That being said, passive radar jamming doesn't work for shit. Not at all.

mount it somewhere out of sight and rig up a little lightbulb somewhere inconspicuous.. im about to go crazy with a scanner and jammer in my car after the incredible series of bullshit tickets ive gotten in the past couple months.. still in the research phase though

I had one of those talking whistler ones to impress people :D

then it got stolen out of my car :(

still, while I had it people thought it was cool

Saved my butt about a year ago. A Maine state officer clocked me slowing down from ludicris, do-not-pass-go speed to 78. And he still wrote a ticket that cost me about $150.

And my detector is mounted above the mirror.

I have a passport hardwired above my mirror as long as it not in the tinted area you should be ok. The only thing I am worried about is that the rear detector lense or whatever that is mounted on the top of the detector for picking up signals from behind is jammed into the ceiling but it still picks up laser from behind ahd my friend test it out is a cop. And whats nice of having it hardwired is that when you get pulled over the cops cant see it!! just put it in dark mode- by the way did I say that I love my passport!!

From the ones I've used, I've found out that they normally don't work that well (or NY cops are more devious). Laser seems to be used a lot up here and they are using the instant-on radar a lot more. They also have something called POP which turns on and off tagging cars at random. Luckily, they've been pretty cool with me the last three times I've been pulled over.

The tinting won't matter.

As for the rest of it.... well, ask for a ridealong. Most agencies are keen on the idea, and coppers love showing off their toys. And, their tricks.

Ok,
Here is the answer to your question.
1) You will get an almost negligible increase in detection range if you mount it above the rearview rather than on the dash. Radar travels in line of site. That is from where you are sitting to the horizon which, when the ground is perfectly flat, is 12 miles, but is relative to antenna (detector height). So if your detector is a little higher, you will detect a little sooner
2) Now having said that. The radar cone (what the 5.0 transmits) covers 4 lanes of traffic (plus the median) at 1000 feet, so the cop has to decide which vehicle is screwed. Normally tickets are not written outside 1000ft for that reason. The Lidar (laser) cone is only about 2.5 ft wide at 1000 feet, so like it has been previously stated, your screwed.
3) Most cops are too lazy to use the instant on feature (because that have to put the donut down and push a button) so they leave it in transmit and wait for some unsuspecting speeder blast past, then they have to put the donut down and push a button to lock in the speed. That is why it is hard to get out of speeding tickets because you pissed them off, when they had to put the donut down.
4) Valentine One is at the top of the pile for dashmount detectors, but, you spend a lot of money for feature that don't do you any good, just bells and whistles. Next on the dash mount list is the Passport, not quite as expensive. The next two are tied for #3, Whistler and Cobra. Any others aren't worth the packing they come in. When these are ranked, it is by detection range primarily.
5) POP mode is a new mode that is being utilized in more and more places every day. Most of the detectors will pick it up. Now here is the catch that most ppl don't know. POP mode is just for detection only, meaning the 5.0 cannot write a ticket on that. They have to shift the transmitter to normal mode to lock your speed. So if you have detector and POP goes off, you have precious little time to get your butt slowed down, but you do have a little.

Now that I have rambled on for half a page here is one more piece of info. While the Valentine has the best detection range with the Passport a close second, there is not enough difference between the top and the bottom of the pile to justify spending the extra money. Buy a Whistler, that has a compass and talks to you, best bang for your buck.

Have you guys seen the detector/scrambler made by rockymountain radar? Its only like 70 bucks. They say it they will pay for your ticket. What I really hate is if they pace you.

great thanks for all of the info, now i have a better idea, i think ill hard wire my radar above my mirror, that way its harder to see by the baconboys

No i haven't read about this, I've read their reviews which pretty much states what the guy aboved stated...but does anyone have any info on an inexpensive detector they make?
