16's stock alright or should it be faster

Hi everyone, i am new to dsm's but not to turbo cars... my question is a few days ago i bought a 1992 laser rs turbo awd with m/t and it is completely stock not even the free mods and i took it to the track and ran a 16.07 1/4 with a 2.58 60' time this was the first time i have ever even attempted to launch an awd car. i am guessing the times could look ALOT better with improved launches 2.58 for awd is horrible. so basically what my question is should i be in the low mid or high 15s stock because i know i shouldnt be in the 16's

wow 2.5 60' is HORRIBLE, I have done better in my fwd You should be able to cut at least a 2.0 60' no problem (as long as your drivetrain is up for it). Remember you have a 15 year old car don't expect it to perform like it was brand new from the showroom but you should be able to do a low 15sec if you drop your 60' time.

My 89 civic si hatchback, stock with 230k on it, ran a 16.3. My old fwd tsi stock, saw a best of a 15.5 or .4 iirc. The biggest help is seat time. Give it more practice, and be patient with her!

Get more seat time, practice launching, and react on the 3rd yellow light (not the green) and you should be in the 15's easily.

That seems really low... I have seen non boosted 4 door SHO's run just as good as that...

Get that bad boy tuned!

I realize your talking in regards to stock 1/4 mile times, but have you at least gone over the car. Have you done proper maintnance (check air filter, fuel filter, plugs, wires, boost leaks.) You can't have any expectations from a car unless you have a general idea what kind of shape it is in. If your car is missing or has fouled plugs it could affect your launches dramaticaly. If everything is in good working order you should be able to hit a 15.1 - 15.2. My 2g ran a 14.3sec with a 1.6sec 60' with an air filter, 1g bov, and a 14b.

wow! this is awesome a forum that actually answers questions fast and with great responses! (i think i am really going to like this forum) and for feedback yes i have the car all up to date with the mantanence only thing there is left to do before i start tuning is to replace the front drive axles because the boots are torn, i know i could just replace the boots but with a car this old might as well just get new ones. another thing i was going to ask is... i just installed a autometer a/f gauge and a autometer boost gauge a few hours ago and the a/f says i am runing really rich like 3rd to the last green led also the boost gauge says i am only runing 9psi does all of this sound normal for a stock car? thanks again guys all of you are the main reason i switched to a dsm car, seems like all dsm people stick together and are about performance

Your reaction time does not effect your e/t.

Unless your in bracket racing. So instead of trying to beat the light, just focus. You can leave the line 40 seconds after the light turns green, and still run a 16.00

When my 94 GSX was bone stock, I ran [email protected] with a 2.09 60'. You just need to get a lot more practice and get your launches down. High 14s ARE possible in a bone stock 1G AWD with a really good launch.

First time I took the Laser to the track I ran a 15.2 with a 2.4 60'. Of note is the car has 195,000 miles on the engine with bad rings, is FWD, and has the cheapest tires money can buy.

I'm hoping with new rings, stickier tires, and some free mods, I can get into the 14's.

Like stated above, be sure to check for boost leaks. More seat time will help, also.

yes sir welcome to dsm tuner yeah i liked this forum to for the same reasons....and there are allot of helpful information here....but yeah my stock 96 rs runs 16.3 but yeah i think you need some maintainance on yours and some tuning...

yeah that what not tuning will do to you, and that "bad boy" blew the head gasket and the turbo and warped the head on the way back so it'll be badder when it goes back to the track with cams, link, FP green, 880cc injectors and of course them other mods needed.

Update! all i can say is i am really really happy now! i decided to go over my car again and saw that my air filter was DIRTY iam talking like cat hair, clumps of dust, etc... and that my car had autolite spark plugs in it. i went to the store got ngk plugs and a new air filter, while i had my air filter out i removed the lower honeycomb and took the silencer out. then i ran it again here are my new times:

60' 2.38 @ 30.2 mph

1/8 mi 9.79 @ 74.4 mph

1/4 mi 14.91 @ 95.3 mph

i was running cheveron 91 oct gas with octane booster added my autometer boost gauge said i was a little over 9psi.

i am very happy with these numbers just need to get my 60' better...

gut the cat or put a strait pipe in and turn the boost up to about 16-17 and it will run mid 13's all day long ! my 92 ran 13.20's at 103-104......with k&n, strait pipe and boost turned up !

Look up free mods here and you'll be even quicker. You already have an advantage, as Laser's are the lightest DSM's. A little more seat time and you'll be in the low 14's by doing nothing more than practice. Figure for every tenth of a second you shave off your 60', you'll be 2 tenths quicker in the 1/4 mile. So if you get that down to 1.8ish, which isn't that hard, you'll be low 14's for sure. Search for a thread here about launching and you'll get some good tips.

And that Autometer air/fuel gauge isn't really telling you much. You really ought to invest in a wideband and a logger before you get too much farther along with your mods. Do not just turn your boost up to 17psi and nail it. You could do mucho damage. Increasing it to 12-13psi will be OK, as long as you have a logger at minimum.

95mph, you should be able to get into the deep 14's or high 13's with that mph.

Working on the 60' will definitely put you there. You should be able to pull 1.7-1.8 60's with practice, a good clutch, and lower tire pressures (or good tires).

I just took my winter beater GVR4 to the track this weekend (which is almost completely stock -- 2.5" T-back, 510cc injectors, 2G MAF, SAFC, running 10psi boost), it did consistent 1.82-1.83 60's, and 14.3 @ 90mph (74mph in the 1/8th). And that was with a dying fuel pump, in a much heavier car than the Laser RS with 185+Kmiles on the car.

Your launch is the key thing to work on. Perfecting that will dramatically drop your ET's.

If you are spinning, drop your tire pressures. If you are bogging, launch from a higher rpm, and flutter the throttle instead of just holding it steady at a specific rpm.

Either way, make sure you have a capable clutch as it will likely go from practicing launches too much.

Your getting the worst 60ft times. It doesn't seem like your cars stock with those trap speeds either. My t25 2g ran a 14.6 stock with a 1.9 60ft.
