Im rebuilding my first engine, a 1994 4G37 1.8 SOHC stock. I received my head back from the machine shop with the cam dowel was at the 12 oclock position. Im confused, after a mock-up and valve clearance test, I noticed my cam sprocket timing mark was at the 9 oclock position. So here we are, my repair manual clearly shows the timing marks for the cam at the 12 oclock, I have my tear-down photos showing the same. But the machine shop, a Mitsubishi rebuild video I bought and every thread I can find on the DSM site notes the dowel pin to be at 12 oclock position for correct timing. Which way is correct, and second, from my understanding the head cannot be configured any other way, correct? The cam lobes turn the rockers and valves at its design rate, a machinist assembles the head, but doesnt adjust any timing (excluding) tweaks to the cam/ports/valves etc..prior to the assembly.
