Sup People, My name is bryan, and I have a 1990 Plymouth Laser R/S non-turbo.
The problam that i am having is trying to find any type of after market support. Yes I know that its not the famed 4G63. But lets face it, how many people have that motor!?
How many people buld up a single over cam motor...? None that i know of.
Any ways i was woundering if some one could point me in the right direction to find the parts that i want or to see what parts will cross over.
I already know that they changed most of the electrical stuff in mid year of 90, so there is a few things i cant use like the distubutor.
I am trying to do something different. SO if some one can help me, that would be great...if not thats cool, i do have my own theorys, maybe i'll answer my own question

People have chose the 4g63 over the 4g67 many times over for a reason. If you chose to boost a 1.8, not only would you have to get supporting mods to support it, but you'd have to build the motor in order for it to withstand forced induction. Spending money on that would make it possible, but when you've spend x amount of money making your car as quick as a stock TSI, a stock TSI has gone much much faster for less money. Just what I think.

You will learn it's going to be much easier and cost about the same to just buy a new car.
I know this is hard (I can't get over this fact either :p) but it's the truth.
Take it from a fellow NT guy (2.0 4G63)
I'm probably just going to engine swap this beast (because I'm so stubborn)
It IS possible to engine swap your car to a 2.0, but it's gonna end up a big hack job. You don't want that :p

well i know what i need to boost it, i know what parts i can use to cross over....i had to go all the way back to 86-88 but i can boost it. and the amount i want to use is only about 5-7psi..not much, but still nothing you have seen with that motor, and im sure that the rods, crank, pistion, ect...can handel that amount with out sending a piston through my head.
its just hard to find the parts i need and was hoping some one else may know more than me on this matter.

I love my little 'better' see like i said, im trying to more or less get more out of this motor, i know what i can do with a 4G63....thats a no brainner, but the 1.8 is a challange, i think that it could be a shocker..

Stop double posting. If you have something else to add, you can edit your post.

And, if you "know" what it is you need to turbo that engine, then do it already. "Shock" us. And if there isn't a large market for a certain engine, someones going to need to learn to fabricate. Or at least have enough money to have someone else do it for them.

In the long run, they can be made to be fast. But with that money, you could have made a 4g63T even faster. The 4g63T was made for boost, the 4g67 was not.

The 1.8 motor on your car is actually a 4g37 not 4g67, ftw :p.
As for boosting it, instead of telling you that it will be expensive, i'll add to the idea.
I do believe the exhaust manifold/header head ports are the same, just use a 1g or 2g exh mani.

I think it'll be hella interesting! And exciting seeing a 1.8 dsm boosted. If bryan wants to make his 1.8 a lil more funner; then go for it man! I would love to see how that one comes out. I say its gona be kinda hard to find any bolt on parts, but nothings imposible. Let us know how that goes.

yeah i can turbo the engine, and im not trying to get sum 500+ motor....just from the stock 95 hp to about 150 maybe 200hp.
I can use a 86-88 colt or mariage 1.5 turbo man. I can run a 2.0 ECM or a Apexi AFC, run a small side mout incoolor from blitz, can stick with the stock injectors( acording to DSM).
But the problam is, is i cant improve my fire to the plugs, Ive thoought about running a aftermarket ignition system, but not sure if i can wire it in and make it work right, then there is the clutch, fly wheel and drive axel issues.....sure i can get a better clutch, but what is the better one to go with, and axels are there any aftermarket ones i can use.....the flywheel ive given up on, i'll just keep my stock one...would any of this work and does any one have any ideas about gitting ot to the ground?

i thought i could use the 4G63 exhoust Man, but the bolt patterns are a little different, as for the whole head, im not sure how that would even work. So thats why ive been more or less trying to improve on the stock 1.8.......give me some feed back and if (in theory) it would work.

I'm not too sure if you'd even feel much of a difference with 5-7 psi of boost... You'd really have much more potential with a 4g63 but if you want something different, go for it!

ok as for the drive train use a nt 2.0 tranny and cv axles cause the trannys are interchangeable and i think the axles are to and then just buy a nice 2.0 clutch or for that matter a stock one would beniefit u more than a 1.8....and just use a 14b cause there all over the place i have 2 just sitting LOL and use a 1g side mount.

the NT-for both the 4G37 and the 4G63 - F5M22 tranny has the 4.29:1 final ratio whereas the Turbo F5M33 has the 4.10:1 final ratio.

Something to think about there as well when wanting to turbo NT motors..

feel much of a difference with 5-7 psi of boost
He would feel something with these lower numbers since the chassis for the 1.8L is a lighter (called a "D-21" chassis) chassis than for the 2.0T (called the "D-22" chassis) - good 200 lbs difference..why 1.8's run stock 14inch wheels.

Have to remember that a 4G63T stock turbo setup has the heavier motor and transmission. Thus, the chassis had to handle the added weight.

well i know for a fact that the 1.8 and 2.0 nt tranny are geared differently cause weve put 2 1.8 trannys behind a nt2.0 car it was our beater and it mad 0 to 60 times quicker but it ran out way quick and it would do a hellaous burnout till we shattered the tranny LOL

thanx guys for all the ideas, how ever, its not really gonna be set up for neck breaking speed, more or less showiing that some one with an idea, and the know how can do what ever they want, i may bput it on the track, but dobut it.
Its manily a personl goal of mine, and something different, as ive said......but thanks for the imput, cas i was not sure if the other trans woould work, but i guess now i waill try it...thNX again guys

there was a good writeup on turboing a 1.8 on a budget, but i can't seem to find it. If it's a goal of yours, go for it! Just realize the car isn't going to be much of a "shocker"

your best bet for good parts would be to call a place and have it made custom to your desires. i have a 1.8 and i love it. gets great gas mileage and still breaks 100mph. i too have searched far and wide for aftermarket parts but as for the motor there isnt really anything. and to you 2.0 guys if you think its so easy to sell a car and buy a better one then you are mistaken. id love to be driving an awd turbo but its just unrealistic at this point. for me at least. the 1.8 can be turned into a great DD but be warned you will need to be prepared to rebuild your motor. ive already went threw one. still breaking in the second. if your looking for speed get rid of everything and i do mean everything stick with simple guages and only enough wire to run the car. there are alot of loose connectors in the car. i mean whats the point of them they go to nothing. remove the a/c, convert to manual steering, balance shafts, and anything else you can think of. i have a huge pile of unused parts just laying in my shed. then get the motor rebuilt maybe even bore it .20 over and get different pistons, get a different cam im sure it would be cheap enough. LESS IS MORE(power that is)

well i think i have it Figured out now....now that ive gotten two motors, im gonna make one an "all motor" build, anf the other i will turbo....any one have any good ideas as to what pistons and rods i should get, im thinking about doing 020. over on the black for starters.
