Is there a step-by-step instructional guide showing the average joe how to time an 1.8l sohc mitsu engine anywere? Im still in search of a good source.

If you did a belt on the 1.8L : (4G37)

1-Have all the marks aligned up on all three pulleys - CAM, Front Balancer sprocket and oil pump sprocket with the crank sprocket marks.

1a - you have to get the oil pump sprocket in phase with the front balancer sprocket. Take a hold of the oil pump sprocket and put it at the 12:00 position. When you release it, it should roll anti-clockwise. If it rolls clockwise, the balancer behind the sprocket is 180* out of phase. Roll the sprocket one turn and again stop at the 12:00 position. Then it should roll anti-clockwise (and this goes for 2.0L motors as well..)

2- When you tighten up the adjuster, all marks should be aligned up to their respective pulleys

3- behind the battery within the wire harness that runs against the firewall, there should be a connector with a cap on it. Take the cap off, with a jumper wire (wire with two alligator clips on each end), clip one end to the contact within this connector and the other end to ground. This disables the ECU to adjust timing.

4-Start the motor and have the DIST loosened using the 12mm wrench and roll the DIST to the *5 BTDC mark on the timing cover with the timing light on No.1 sparkplug wire.

5-Lock the DIST down, stop the motor and remove the jumper wire.

You should be on your way by now.. "..piece of pie..."

Good luck-DSM

kinda weird how you ground out the advance like that. most cars I've seen (like my camaro) use a connector you can simply disconnect to run without the ecm playing with timing advance.
